Tennessee's Peter Handoyo Makes Quarterfinals Of ATP Futures Event

ONTARIO, Canada -- Tennessee tennis player Peter Handoyo advanced to the quarterfinals of this week's $10,000 ATP Futures Mississauga Open being held in Ontario, Canada. Handoyo, a senior to be at UT, is a two-time All-America performer at Tennessee and was recently announced as a member of the Indonesian Davis Cup team. Handoyo won five straight matches, making it through three qualifying rounds and two rounds of the main draw before finally bowing out of the professional event.
Handoyo began his run with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 6 seed Bobby Kokavec of Canada. Handoyo then ousted former-Vol Paul Podbury in the second qualifying round 6-2, 6-4. The last time the two Vols met was the final of last season's UT Fall Classic, which saw Podbury take the victory. Handoyo's final qualifying round opponent was No. 1 qualifying seed and All-America at Yale this season Steve Berke. Handoyo defeated Berke 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the main draw.
In his opening round match, Handoyo defeated Canadian Davis Cup team member Jocelyn Robichaud 7-5, 6-4. Handoyo continued his fine play in the second round with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 upset victory over No. 2 seed and the world's No. 422-ranked player c of France. Handoyo's run was ended in a hard-fought quarterfinal match by Indian Davis Cup player Harsh Mankad 6-7, 6-4, 7-5.
"This was a great effort by Peter (Handoyo) to come through the qualifying rounds and make it to the quarterfinals of the main draw in a pro event," UT assistant coach Chris Mahony said. "It is wonderful to see Peter show his excellent form from the NCAA's, where he made the round of 16 last month. His is really doing a fine job of preparing himself for his pro career."
Handoyo was ineligible for any prize money at the event. He was competing as an amateur to keep his eligibility at Tennessee for his senior season. Handoyo will still receive ATP ranking points for his performance at this tournament.
