University of Tennessee freshman catcher Javi Herrera was one of 22 players selected to the 2001 USA National Team. Herrera and a pool of 29 collegiate players went through four days of trials in Tucson, Ariz., which ended Tuesday.
Herrera is the second Volunteer in as many years to play for Team USA as Chris Burke played on last year's team that compiled a 27-3-1 record. Former Vols Todd Helton, R.A. Dickey and Augie Ojeda also played on Team USA during their collegiate careers.
Herrera, a freshman All-America, hit .296 with seven home runs and 45 RBI for the Volunteers (48-20) who finished tied for third at the College World Series last week. Noted for his defensive prowess and his ability to call pitches, Herrera picked off eight runners to lead the Southeastern Conference.
Team USA will play 29 more games on the Red, White and Blue Summer Tour, following their first game of the summer last night, which they won 5-1 over the Chicago Cubs rookie level affiliate at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Ariz. Team USA will now travel to Japan Wednesday for the 30th annual USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series.
Florida's Pat McMahon is serving as the head coach for Team USA. He is assisted by Dusty Rhodes of North Florida, Paul Stevens of Northwestern, and Bob Todd of Ohio State.
