Bulldogs Beat Vols 7-2 For Series Win

Knoxville, Tenn. - Tanner Brock pitched a complete game five-hitter as the Mississippi State Bulldogs pounded out a dozen hits in a 7-2 victory over the No. 11 Tennessee Volunteers at Lindsey Nelson Stadium to win the series two games to one.
Brent Lewis led the Mississippi State (18-12, 9-6 Southeastern Conference) with three hits while Matthew Mansicalco, Michael Brown and Phillip Willingham added two each. Willingham also hit his first home run of the season.

Tennessee starter Brian Gates (4-4), who took the loss, was lifted in third after giving up a home run and three consecutive singles as Mississippi State took a 2-1 lead. Reliever Brandon Crowe was roughed up for four runs on five hits 4 2/3 innings as he struckout five and walked one. Justin Parker pitched the final two innings for the Vols.
Dennis Gomez had two of Tennessee's five hits, while Chris Burke saw his career-high 18-game hitting end with an 0-for-4 day.
After allowing an unearned run in the second, the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on Willingham's home run and a Jason Burkley single. They added their third run in the fifth as Willingham scored on a Vol error for a 3-1 lead.
Mississippi State broke the game open in the seventh as it got three runs on four hits, including a two-run single by Steve Gendron and RBI single from Lewis for a 6-1 lead. They added an insurance run in the eighth on a single by Brown.
Tennessee's next game is at Tennessee Tech, Wednesday, Apr. 11 at 6 p.m. CT.
