Georgia Defeats Tennis Vols 6-1

Athens, Ga. - The fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs defeated No. 11 Tennessee 6-1 Sunday in a battle of SEC heavyweights in Athens. The loss drops the Vols to 12-4 overall and 5-2 in SEC play.

"This is disappointing, but I think we will be able to play them better in the tournament," said Tennessee head coach Michael Fancutt. "Georgia is a fantastic team, their top six players are all ranked in the top 50 nationally. Put that with the fact that we have three guys with some major injuries and you come up with what happened today. We just cannot seem to find enough time to get these guys healthy, but as soon as we do get them healthy I think we will do great things."
Georgia (16-1, 8-0 SEC) led from the start as they took the doubles point winning two of the three matches. Georgia’s top-ranked tandem of Matias Boeker and Travis Parrott defeated Tennessee’s Paul Podbury and Mario Toledo 8-5 in the No. 1 match. Georgia’s duo of Brandon Wagner and Bo Hodge then clinched the doubles point with a 8-6 victory over No. 38 Andy Crews and Peter Handoyo in the No. 3 match. Tennessee’s lone victory in doubles came from the 12th-ranked pair of Mark Parsons and Adam Carey. They defeated Georgia’s Chad Carlson and Nicolas Boeker 8-6 in the No. 2 match for their fourth win in five matches.
Georgia continued their dominance in the singles segment as it took five of the six matches to complete the 6-1 win. Winners for the Bulldogs in singles were No. 5 Boeker in the No. 2 match over No. 44 Adam Carey. No. 43 Chad Carlson in the No. 3 match over No. 33 Peter Handoyo. No. 27 Lesley Joseph over No. 62 Mario Toledo in the No. 4 match. No. 41 Travis Parrott over No. 74 Paul Podbury in the No. 5 match and No. 37 Brandon Wagner over Simon Rea in the No. 6 match.
80th-ranked Mark Parsons got the Vols only singles win with an impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory over the nation’s second-ranked player Bo Hodge. The win was Parsons' third straight overall, with all three victories coming against ranked foes. The win also gives Parsons 115 victories for his career as a Vol, which ties Paul Annacone (1982-84) for third on the Vols all-time wins list.
The Vols will next be in action Friday at Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss.
