Tennis Vols Sneak Past Alabama
March 04, 2001 | Men's Tennis
Things started going Alabama’s way from the beginning as they won the only two doubles matches completed to take the point. The Tide duo of Maxim Belski and William Broyles upset No. 12 Mark Parsons and Adam Carey 8-4 in the No. 1 match. Alabama’s Chris McRae and Chris Gostek then clinched the point with an 8-4 win over the Vols Mario Toledo and Andy Crews.
Alabama also started well in the singles segment, winning the first two completed matches to go up 3-0 in the match. The Tide’s Maxim Belski struck first defeating the Vol’s Mark Parsons in the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-1. No. 71 Belski represents the fourth straight loss for No. 98 Parsons against ranked foes. Alabama’s Chris Gostek then won a third point for the Tide with a 6-3, 6-4 upset victory over No. 83 Mario Toledo. That was where the Tide’s run would end.
Tennessee stormed back to take the last four matches led by junior Adam Carey who won his tenth match in his last 12 outings. Carey defeated Alabama’s Susheel Narla in the No. 2 match 6-4, 6-4. No. 33 Peter Handoyo won his fourth straight match, defeating the tide’s Stephen Mitchell 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 4 match. No. 68 Paul Podbury made quick work of Chris McRae in the No. 5 match, winning 6-2, 6-3. Then Vol freshman Simon Rea clinched the victory for the Vols with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Christian Broderson.
"We were down 3-0 in this match and had to win the last four matches on the court to get the victory and our guys rose to the occasion and got it done," Tennessee head coach Michael Fancutt said. "This was one of the toughest, most hostile environments I’ve seen since I have been here at Tennessee. For our guys to turn it around, I thought it was one of the gutsiest comebacks I have ever seen. Alabama has a big advantage playing on their indoor courts and I am really proud of my guys to get out of there with a win."
Next up for the Vols is a match with No. 12 SMU in Dallas, Texas Friday. The Vols are 5-1 against the Mustangs all-time.
