Lady Vol Tennis Serves Ohio State 5-2 Loss

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer tennis team extended its winning streak to seven matches on Saturday with a 5-2 victory over No. 21 Ohio State at the Varsity Courts.

Co-head coaches Mike Patrick and Sonia Hahn-Patrick solidified their doubles lineup, pairing junior Kim Gates with sophomore Vilmarie Castellvi at the No. 1 slot for the third consecutive match. Junior Alison Ojeda and sophomore Crystal Cleveland played at the No. 2 spot while juniors Agnes Wiski and Dana Noel played together for the first time this season at No. 3. Noel made her first match appearance since the Fall of 2000. She has been side-lined with a knee injury.

The Lady Vols took an early 1-0 lead, sweeping doubles play. Team Castellvi-Gates came from behind to defeat Kristy Dascoli and Monica Rincon by an 8-5 decision. Ojeda and Cleveland improved their record to 3-0 with a 8-3 victory over Sadhot Pervez and Laura Maloney. Noel and Wiski made quick work of Erica Fisk and Claudia Castro, 8-2.

In singles play, Cleveland won her fourth straight match at No. 5, dominating Castro, 6-0, 6-2. Her win put the Lady Vols ahead in the match 2-0. Wiski brought home the No. 4 singles contest with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Fisk to put the Orange and White ahead by three. Castellvi sealed the match at No.3, defeating Pervez (6-4, 6-2).

With the match decided freshman Brooke Cordell picked up the No. 6 slot. She dealt Maloney a 6-4, 6-4 set back. Ojeda, who is rated No. 83 in the latest ITA singles rankings, fell in a tough three-set match to No. 38 Dascoli, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2. Gates fell to No. 97 Monica Rincon, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.

"This is another good win for us. We lost to two good players today," Patrick said. "We lost in three sets, which can take a lot out of a player. I think we have to get a little bit tougher now that we are playing outside."

Up next, the Lady Vols will host the No. 69 rated Auburn Tigers at 1 p.m. Sunday on the Varsity Courts.
