Lady Vol Tennis s Boilermakers in Season Opener

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer tennis team opened the 2001 dual season with a 7-0 blanking of the Purdue University Boilermakers, in a match played at Varsity Courts on the campus of Purdue on Saturday afternoon. The Orange and White have not lost in eight meetings with PU.
The Lady Vols are ranked 17th in the preseason WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The shutout improves Tennessee's record in season openers to 21-4.
Junior Alison Ojeda (San Antonio, Texas/Douglas MacArthur) defeated Erika Quebe, 6-2, 6-2 at the first singles position. The co-captain teamed with sophomore Vilmarie Castellvi (Guaynabo, P.R./Academia San Jose Villa Caparra) at No. 1 doubles to dominate Quebe and Lynsey Fick with an 8-0 victory. Castellvi brought home an Orange and White triumph at the No. 3 singles position with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Missy Wright.
Junior Agnes Wiski (Flushing, N.Y./Benjamin Cardozo) opened the season in the No. 3 singles slot, defeating Melissa Iqbal (6-1, 6-4). Wiski teamed with senior Catherine Hall (Boone, N.C./Watauga) to take the No. 2 doubles match from Melissa Woods and Wright.
Sophomore Crystal Cleveland (Delray Beach, Fla./Westminster Academy) had no trouble at the No. 4 singles spot, defeating Fick 7-5, 6-2. As she did in the fall, freshman Brooke Cordell (Soddy Daisy, Tenn./Baylor) made her dual-debut in Orange and White a victorious one, downing Gretchen Haynor in straight, 6-3, 6-2.
Hall provided the closest contest of the match at No. 6 singles. She and Woods battled in a three-set thriller (6-2, 3-6, 10-8) that went to 10-8 in the third set before Hall was victorious.
The Lady Vols conclude their two-match road trip on Sunday as the team heads to Champaign, Ill., to face the Fighting Illini of Illinois. The tilt is set to begin at noon CT.
