Tennis Vols Fall To Third-Ranked Duke
February 28, 2001 | Men's Tennis
The match started out well for Duke as it took the doubles point winning two of the three doubles matches. Duke’s No. 16 pair of Ramsey Smith and Michael Yani won the No. 1 match 8-3 over No. 12 Mark Parsons and Adam Carey of Tennessee. Duke’s tandem of Marko Cerenko and Phillip King then won the No. 3 match 8-3 over Peter Handoyo and Simon Rea to clinch the point. Tennessee’s doubles win came from the duo of Andy Crews and Mario Toledo. They defeated Duke’s No. 41 pair of Andres Pedroso and Ted Rueger 9-8(3) in the No. 2 match.
In singles the Blue Devils won four of the six matches to complete the win. Ramsey Smith, ranked No. 5 nationally, took the No. 1 match for Duke over No. 83 Mario Toledo 6-4, 6-3. The loss ended a four- match win streak over ranked opponents for Toledo. In the No. 2 match, No. 30 Phillip King got the win for the Blue Devils over No. 98 Mark Parsons 6-2, 7-6(3).
The Vols got their only two wins in the Nos. 3 and 4 matches from Carey and Handoyo respectively. Carey got a big win over No. 9 Marko Cerenko 6-4, 6-4 in what was Cerenko’s first loss in match play this season. For Carey it was his ninth win in his last 11 matches and his 82nd career win which propelled him into the No. 10 spot by himself on the Vols all-time wins list. Carey passed Chris Woodruff (1992-93) and Fabio Silberberg (1989-91) for the spot.
Tennessee junior Peter Handoyo also got a big win in his third match back after surgery (appendictomy). No. 33 Handoyo defeated No. 19 Pedroso 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in the No. 4 match. The win was Handoyo’s 100th of his career which makes him only the fifth Vol to ever achieve that total. Duke’s Joel Spicher and Alex Bose then finished off the Vols with wins in the Nos. 5 and 6 matches over No. 68 Paul Podbury and Simon Rea respectively. The match was Podbury’s first back since injuring his wrist a week ago.
The Vols will next be in action Sunday against Alabama in Tuscaloosa starting at 1 p.m.
