Vols Sweep Dayton With 10-2 Win

Knoxville, Tenn. - The Tennessee Volunteers stole seven bases and rapped out 15 hits en route to a 10-2 victory over the Dayton Flyer for the three-game series sweep. With the win, Tennessee improved to 9-1 while Dayton fell to 0-3.
The 9-1 start by the Volunteers is the best since starting the 1997 season 18-1. It is only the third time in school history that Tennessee has started a season 9-1 with the other occasion coming in 1951 when it began 16-1.
Brandon Hopkins led the way for the Vols by going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Chris Burke, who slugged his third home run of the season, collected two hits along with Stevie Daniel, Dennis Gomez and Javi Herrera.
Wyatt Allen (2-1) allowed one run on five hits in five innings for his second win of the season. He also struck out seven, with six coming in the first three innings.
Kris Bracken (0-1) took the loss, giving up seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings.
The Vols jumped out a 3-0 lead after three innings on a run scoring single by Matt Sternberg in the second, Burke's home run leading off the third and Hopkins' double.
After giving up a run in the fourth on a single by Clint Beasley, Tennessee scored two in the fifth on Hopkins' second RBI and a double steal for a 5-1 lead.
Tennessee broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning as the Vols sent nine men to the plate in grabbing a 9-1 lead. They got run scoring hits from Gomez, Herrera and Ryan Moffett.
Justin Parker added a pinch-hit run scoring double in the seventh and Dave Schindler drove in Dayton's second run in the ninth for a 10-2 final.
Tennessee concludes its four-game homestand against East Tennessee State, Wednesday at 3 p.m.
