The Vols first took the doubles point winning the first two completed matches. The initial win for the Vols came from the freshman tandem of Wade Orr and Simon Rea, who defeated Vanderbilt's Chad Harris and Josh Tarkoff in the No. 3 match 8-2. The ninth-ranked pair of Mark Parsons and Adam Carey then clinched the point for the Vols in the No. 1 match defeating No. 50 Eddie Coates and Bobby Reynolds 8-5. The No. 47 pair of Brad Hambrick and Lewis Smith won the only doubles match for the Commodores. They defeated the nation's No. 16 tandem of Andy Crews and Peter Handoyo 8-5 in the No. 2 match.
Tennessee then finished off the Commodores winning five of the six singles matches. The Vols were led by senior Mark Parsons who clinched the match defeating Eddie Coates in the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-4. Coates had defeated the nation's No. 1 player Oskar Johannson of Arkansas earlier in the week. Tennessee junior Mario Toledo won the No. 3 match over No. 90 Chad Harris 6-3, 6-3. The victory was Toledo's third straight over a ranked opponent. No. 28 Peter Handoyo played in his first match for the Vols since having surgery shortly after the season opener against UT-Chattanooga (1/14/01). Handoyo won the No. 4 match over Jens Frederiksen 7-6, 7-5. The win marked Handoyo's 98th as a Vol, which moves him ahead of Earl Grainger for No. 5 on the Vols all-time wins list.
"It felt good to be back out there," Handoyo said. "I thought I played well enough to win. It is hard trying to play outside right now, because I am not 100 percent. I was just trying to be aggressive when I could and it turned out well."
Tennessee's Wade Orr and Simon Rea also had singles victories over the Commodore's Zach Dailey and Brad Hambrick respectively. The lone winner for Vanderbilt in singles was Bobby Reynolds in the No. 2 match. Reynolds fought back to defeat No. 73 Adam Carey 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
"The game ball goes to Peter (Handoyo) today," Tennessee head coach Michael Fancutt said. "He has come back from surgery and played very tough. He has struggled trying to come back, but he showed great determination in winning his match today. I am also very proud of Mark Parsons. This was a big win for Mark since (Eddie) Coates just beat the nation's No. 1 player this week."
Tennessee will be back in action Sunday, taking on No. 13 Illinois at the Varsity Courts on the UT campus starting at 11:30 a.m.
"We are playing fairly well right now," Fancutt said. "We are a little banged up, but we are still winning. This was a big win for our team today, every SEC match is huge. Hopefully we can keep it up tomorrow against a very good Illinois team. Illinois beat us last year so this will be a little bit of a revenge match for us."
