| Tennessee's Michael Fancutt was named the Jim Verdieck Coach of the Year by the Professional Tennis Registry, the world's largest tennis teaching organization. |
The Professional Tennis registry has 10,300 members from 120 countries who are tennis coaches and teachers which comprises the world's largest tennis teaching organization.
The award is given to a PTR member who has demonstrated the highest standards in the coaching of players or teams. Displayed not only in their accomplishments, but in their character as well. Areas of consideration include academic performance, community or school service and team rankings and accomplishments.
"I am very pleased to win this award," Fancutt said. "It means a lot to have your peers think so highly of you and the work you do as a teacher. I believe it is important to remember that at the college level we are still teachers and we have these kids futures in our hands. So we just need to continue doing all we can to help these kids become better adults as well as better tennis players. The members who give this award work in professional to college tennis, so they know what it takes to be successful in this sport and it really excites me to think that I have done the necessary things to win this award."
Fancutt, who was named Region III and SEC Coach of the Year in 1998, is currently in his fourth season as head coach of the Vols and has amassed a 60-24 overall record. He has also guided Tennessee to the NCAA tournament in his first three seasons and a trip to college tennis' Final Four last season. Fancutt led the team to an SEC title and a No. 3 national ranking a year ago and currently has the Vols ranked No. 2 nationally.
