Tennis Vols Defeat VCU At National Team Indoors

Seattle, Wash. - Tennessee defeated No. 11 Virginia Commonwealth 4-3 for their second victory over the Rams in a week in the 9th- place game at the National Team Indoor Championships. The second-ranked Vols (5-1) had earlier defeated the Rams in the final of the O'Charley's Tennis Classic last weekend in Knoxville 4-2.
This was Tennessee's fourth victory of the season over ranked opponents and gave the Vols a 2-1 record in the National Indoor tournament.
Tennessee did not start out well, losing the doubles point to the Rams two matches to one. In the No. 1 match VCU's eighth-ranked duo of Florian Marquardt and Frank Moser defeated Tennessee's ninth-ranked tandem of Adam Carey and Mark Parsons 9-7. UT got its only doubles win from the tandem of Paul Podbury and Mario Toledo, defeating Mats Norin and Mattius Hoglund 8-5 in the No. 2 match. VCU's Ferdi Sanchez and Daniel Casquero defeated Simon Rea and Andy Crews 9-8 to clinch the doubles point for the Rams.
Tennessee did the job in the singles segment as they won four of the six matches to complete the 4-3 win. VCU's Frank Moser defeated the Vol's Mark Parsons for the second time this week in the No. 1 match 7-5, 5-1 (default). Tennessee's Mario Toledo won his second straight match over a ranked foe and got revenge for last week's loss when he defeated No. 50 Florian Marquardt 1-6, 6-0, 6-2. No. 73 Adam Carey got back on track with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over VCU's Ferdi Sanchez which was his seventh win in his last eight matches. VCU's Mats Norin defeated Simon Rea 6-4, 7-6 in the No. 5 match, while Tennessee's other freshman, Wade Orr, won the No. 6 match over Ruben Zrihen 6-4, 6-0. Then No. 35 Paul Podbury clinched the match for the Vols with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Daniel Casquero in the No. 4 match.
Tennessee played without the services of #28 Peter Handoyo and Andrew McDade due to injury.
The tennis Vols will next be in action Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center against Vanderbilt starting at 2 p.m. Admission will be free.
