Tennis Vols Down Rebels At National Indoor Championships
February 16, 2001 | Men's Tennis
The win makes the Vols 4-1 on the season and improves Tennessees record to 18-9 all-time against the Rebels.
In a turnaround from yesterday against Oklahoma State, the Vols shined in the doubles segment winning the first two completed doubles matches to get the point. The ninth-ranked tandem of Mark Parsons and Adam Carey won the first match for the Vols 8-3 over James Shortall and Kristofer Stahlberg in the No. 1 match. The pair of Andy Crews and Simon Rea then clinched the doubles point for the Vols with an 8-6 victory over Paul Ciorascu and Conor Casey in the No. 3 match.
The No. 1 match in singles featured a battle of ranked foes as No. 59 Mark Parsons of Tennessee and No. 11 Alex Hartman of Mississippi went to three sets before Hartman pulled out the victory 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Tennessee junior Mario Toledo won his first match over a ranked foe Friday, downing No. 79 James Shortall 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Tennessee junior Adam Carey has been very consistent for the Vols lately, but had a six-match win streak snapped against Mississippis Kristofer Stahlberg 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 match. No. 35 Paul Podbury won the No. 4 match over Mississippis Martin Selin 6-3, 6-2. Tennessee freshman Wade Orr then sealed the match with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Patrick Chucri at No. 6.
"I am very proud of these guys to bounce back like they did and defeat a good Mississippi team," Tennessee head coach Michael Fancutt said. "We really did not play even close to our potential yesterday, so we were glad to come out here today and show that we are much better than we showed yesterday. I also want to say I am very proud of both Mario (Toledo) and Wade (Orr) for hanging in there and getting big three-set victories."
Tennessee played without the services of #28 Peter Handoyo and Andrew McDade due to injury.
Tennessee will play the winner of the San Diego State-Virginia Commonwealth match at noon Saturday.
