| | Head coach Phillip Fulmer has the Vols in the SEC Championship game for the third time in five years. | Tennessee (10-1, 7-1 SEC) vs. LSU (8-3, 5-3 SEC) Tennessee and LSU will be meeting for the second time this season and the 27th time overall, with the Vols holding a 19-4-3 series lead. The Vols took a 26-18 decision in Knoxville on Sept. 29 this year. The last time Tennessee played a team twice in a season was Kentucky in 1944. UT won both games 26-13 and 21-7. The teams have split the last two meetings in 2000 at Baton Rouge and 2001 in Knoxville. Tennessee won the only neutral site meeting at the 1972 Astro Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston, 24-17. These teams have played off-and-on throughout the years, with no more than four meetings in any decade since the 1920s. Tennessee won 13 of the first 16 meetings (13-1-2) from 1925-72. Since 1974, the Vols are 6-3-1 against the Tigers. Head coach Phillip Fulmer is 2-1 versus the Tigers. Tennessee went a perfect 3-0 against SEC Western Division teams this season for the sixth time in the last nine years. The Vols have won five consecutive games against the West. It marked the second time this season he rushed for more than 200 yards. He first did it against Arkansas when he ground out 206 yards on a school-record tying 41 rushing attempts. He joins Johnnie Jones, Chuck Webb, Tony Thompson, James Stewart and Jamal Lewis as the only Vols to post at least two 200-yard rushing games in a career. Jones did it three times. It is also the fifth time a Vol has done it in a season. It marked the 17th time a UT player had rushed for 200 yards and he is the 10th different player to achieve the feat. It is the eighth highest rushing total in school history. Stephens showed his big play ability against the Gators by breaking off four runs of at least 30 yards, including a season-long 68-yarder. He had runs of 49, 34 and a touchdown run of 35 yards. His two touchdowns in the game were his first scores since the Notre Dame game on Nov. 3. It was the third time he tallied twice in a game this season (Alabama, South Carolina). With his 226-yard effort against Florida, Stephens has 1427 yards and pulled to within striking distance of Jay Graham's single-season rushing mark of 1438 set in 1995 in 11 games. Stephens' total is currently the 12th highest total in SEC history. Seven backs have topped 1500 yards in a season nine times and with 73 yards, Stephens would be the 10th. He has posted seven 100-yard rushing games this season. He is the 10th player in school history to rush for over 1000 yards, marking the 11th time overall. Johnnie Jones is the only Vol to post two 1000-yards seasons in 1983 and 1984. It is the sixth time in the last nine years that a UT back has surpassed the 1000-yard mark in a season. He accounts for 79.3 percent of Tennessee's total rushing yards this season and has 10 of UT's 19 rushing touchdowns. Stephens has 277 carries on the season, which is a school record, bettering the mark of 272 set by Graham in 1995. Stephens also tied UT's record with 41 rushing attempts at Arkansas and has four games with at least 30 rushes. SEC'S LEADING RUSHER Travis Stephens leads the SEC and ranks No. 8 in the NCAA in rushing, averaging 129.7 yards per game. He is the first Vol to lead the SEC in rushing since Tony Thompson averaged 105.1 ypg in 1990. He is the fifth Vol to ever lead the league, joining Hank Lauricella in 1951, Rich Pickins in 1968, Johnnie Jones in 1983 and 1984 and Thompson in 1990. His average of 129.7 ypg ranks as the 12th highest single-season average in league history and second in UT history behind Jamal Lewis' 130.7 set in 1997. Stephens' 277 rushing attempts is the 13th highest total in league history. Five SEC backs have posted 300 carries six times. | TRAVIS STEPHENS CAREER TOTALS | | Att. | Yds | Avg | TD | 100-YD GM | | 474 | 2299 | 4.9 | 21 | 8 | ALL-PURPOSE STEPHENS Travis Stephens ranks third in the SEC and No. 19 nationally with 144.5 all-purpose yards per game. Three times this season he accounted for over 200 all-purpose yards (219 vs. Arkansas, 254 vs. Georgia, 237 vs. Florida). The 254 yards versus Georgia ranked as the fifth-highest total in school history. He became the seventh Vol to amass at least 250 all-purpose yards and the first since Chuck Webb's 250 against Arkansas in the 1990 Cotton Bowl. His 1589 all-purpose yards ranks fifth on UT's single-season list. With 51 more yards, he would move into second place on UT's list, passing Jamal Lewis' 1997 total of 1639. Stephens would need 133 all-purpose yards to break Reggie Cobb's school record of 1721 in 1987. Stephens was also named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week (Sept. 10) after he surpassed the 1000-yard mark for rushing in his career with a 206-yard effort against Arkansas. He has rushed for over 150 yards two other times this season (176 vs. Georgia, 162 vs. Alabama). UT is 7-1 when he rushes for over 100 yards in a game. STEPHENS' CAREER Travis Stephens became the 10th Vol back to rush for over 2000 yards in a career with 79-yard effort against Kentucky. Stephens ranks eighth with 2299 yards and can move into sixth place past Curt Watson (1969-71) with 66 yards against LSU. CONSISTENT CLAUSEN Casey Clausen has been very consistent this season in guiding the Vols to a 10-1 mark. Since taking over as the starter in the sixth game last season, he has posted a 16-2 record and gone 12-1 in SEC action. He has completed more than 50 percent of his passes in each game this season, completing more than 60 percent nine times, including each of the last four. He has completed over 50 percent of his passes in all but one career start. He has thrown for over 200 yards in seven of the last eight games, with six contests of at least 275 yards this season. Over the last four games he has been extremely hot, completing 79-of-119 passes for 66.4 percent, 1029 yards (257.3 ypg) with 12 touchdowns and three interceptions. Clausen ranks No. 2 in the SEC and 10th in the NCAA in passing efficiency at 150.97. In each game this season, he has connected on at least one long pass play of at least 25 yards. For the season, he has 27 big pass plays of 25 yards or more. Last year, the Vols had only 18 the entire season. Clausen has engineered five four-quarter comebacks this season (at Arkansas, at Alabama, South Carolina, at Kentucky, at Florida) and seven in his career (2000: at South Carolina, at Memphis). He was the third Vol named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week (Oct. 22) after he completed 21-of-28 passes for 293 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions against Alabama. He also ran for another score. He joined Kelley Washington vs. LSU and Travis Stephens vs. Arkansas in getting the honor. He recorded the second 300-yard passing day of his career with a 309-yard effort against LSU, completing 18-of-28 passes with one TD and two interceptions. His career-high of 362 yards came against Kentucky last year. Clausen tied his personal-record with five touchdown passes versus Memphis. He threw five scoring strikes against Arkansas last season. It was the sixth time in school history a quarterback passed for five touchdowns. Clausen joins Peyton Manning as the only Vol quarterbacks to do it twice. | | Casey Clausen has led the Vols to seven fourth quarter comebacks during his UT career. | | UT CAREER PASSING LEADERS | | 1. Alan Cockrell - 3,823 | CLAUSEN CLIMBS CHARTS Casey Clausen continues to work his way up UT's passing charts in this is sophomore season. He is already in fifth place with 4110 career yards passing and is fourth with 35 touchdown passes. With one more TD strike, he will tie Andy Kelly (1988-91) and Heath Shuler (1991-93) for second with 36. Peyton Manning is first with 89. Clausen has already passed Manning's first two years total of 33. Clausen and Manning are the only Vol quarterbacks to pass for over 4000 yards in their first two seasons. Manning threw for 4095 yards, while Clausen has 4110. Only four other Vol quarterbacks have reached that mark in their careers (Andy Kelly-6397, Jeff Francis-5867, Tee Martin-4592, Heath Shuler-4088). Clausen will likely have to wait until next season before taking aim at Tee Martin's fourth place total of 4592 yards. He became became 12th quarterback in school history to pass for over 3000 yards in a career with a 228-yard effort against Notre Dame. GRAHAM & DAVIS COME UP BIG Senior receiver Bobby Graham and freshman Jabari Davis had the best day of their respective careers against Florida. Graham hauled in seven catches for 71 yards against Florida. His previous bests were four catches versus Georgia this season and 57 yards vs. Memphis in 1999. He has caught at least one pass in all but one game and has 10 receptions for 103 yards in the last two. Davis scored the first two touchdowns of his career against the Gators on 2 and 1-yard runs. He has rushed nine times for 54 yards (6.0 ypr) in the last two games. CATCHING UP WITH STALLWORTH After missing three games (Arkansas, LSU, Georgia) with a wrist injury, Donte' Stallworth has been playing catch up over the last seven games. During that span, he has 31 receptions for 670 yards (21.7 ypc) and nine touchdown catches. He has also posted three 100-yard receiving games in the last four. Stallworth would rank among the nation's leaders with his 90.6 receiving yards per game, but has not played in the minimum 75-percent of UT's games. With 128 yards receiving on four catches versus Vanderbilt, Stallworth became the first Vol to record three consecutive 100-yard receiving games since Marcus Nash did it against Southern Miss (110), Arkansas (126) and Kentucky (195) in 1997. Joey Kent holds the school record with seven consecutive 100-yard receiving games to start the 1996 season. Stallworth posted 193 all-purpose yards against Vanderbilt that included a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown. He established a career-high with 169 yards receiving on eight receptions against Kentucky while tying the school record for receiving touchdowns with three. His three scores came on passes of 59, 23 and 38 yards. Stallworth is the first Vol to ever catch three touchdowns in a game twice in a career and it's only been done five other times. He took six of his eight catches for first downs versus the Wildcats. In the fourth quarter, he hauled in four passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns of 23 and 38 yards. The 23-yarder tied the game at 28-28, while the 38-yarder put UT up 35-28. He celebrated his birthday in a big way with 142 yards receiving on seven catches against Memphis and a school-record tying three touchdown receptions. Stallworth has two other 100-yard receiving games in his career. The first was a 130-yard effort against South Carolina in 1999 and then he had 108 versus Nebraska in 2000 Fiesta Bowl. Fifteen of Stallworth's 32 catches this season have gone for at least 20 yards. Stallworth's TD catches: 37 vs. SU, 21 vs. UA, 17 vs. ND, 33, 14, 35 vs. UM, 59, 23, 38 vs. UK, 80 vs. VU STALLWORTH'S CAREER Donte' Stallworth ranks 10th all-time at Tennessee with 1651 yards receiving and needs 49 yards to become the 10th Vol to amass 1700 career receiving yards. He needs eight receptions to become the 14th member of the 100-career catch club at Tennessee. His 17.9 yards per catch average is the highest of any Vol with at least 90 career catches. | | John Henderson is one of three finalists for the 2001 Outland Trophyafter winning the award last season. | HENDERSON: OUTLAND FINALIST Outland Trophy award finalist John Henderson recorded the 20th sack of his career against Kentucky and is now tied with Steve White (1992-95) for sixth on UT's career sack chart. Henderson has made at least one tackle for loss or sack in 18 of the last 20 games he has played. In fact, he had made at least two stops behind the line 11 times in his career, including four multi-sack contests. After sitting out the Arkansas game with a high ankle sprain, he returned to action against LSU, recording two tackles with a sack. He followed that performance with a season-high eight tackles and one sack day against Georgia. The 2000 Outland Trophy winner had a productive day against Syracuse by recovering a fumble that set up a Travis Stephens TD run. He also registered two tackles for loss among his three tackles in the game. VOLS GETTING PICKS UT defenders are finding the ball lately with eight interceptions over the last five games. They had only four in the first six. FS Rashad Baker leads with four and is tied for second in the SEC with that total. After being even in the turnover department in the first six games, the Vols are a plus-5 over the last five, forcing 13 turnovers, while making eight. WASHINGTON'S STEADY PACE Freshman Kelley Washington, who was a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award, continues to pace the Vol receiving corps with 55 catches for 870 yards. On UT's single-season list, his 55 receptions ranks ninth, while the 870 yards is the eighth-highest total. He is the only Vol to catch a pass in every game. Washington, who is the second leading freshmen receiver nationally, is averaging 79.1 receiving yards per game, which is fifth in the SEC and ranks No. 38 in the NCAA. With 130 yards, he will become the third Vol to reach 1000 yards. For the season, he has taken 40 of his 55 catches for first downs and has 40 receptions for at least 10 yards. Washington, who has made at least five catches six times, has two 100-yard receiving games and posted at least 50 yards receiving in eight of the last 10 games. He was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week after setting a Tennessee single-game receiving yardage record with 256 yards on 11 receptions and one TD against LSU. NOTES ON WASHINGTON'S RECORD DAY: Broke Johnny Mills' school receiving record of 225 set against Kentucky in 1966 ? Total is the fourth highest total in SEC history ? The other two Vols to collect 200 yards receiving were Willie Gault vs. Vanderbilt in 1981 and Stanley Morgan vs. TCU in 1976 ? * Washington hauled in 11 catches and had one touchdown that came on a career-best 70-yard reception from Casey Clausen. He also had three additional receiving plays covering at least 30 yards. The 11 catches were two shy of the school record and all 11 went for first downs. SCOTT BACK IN THE GROOVE Leonard Scott is returning to the form that has made him a dangerous kickoff returner the last two years. Over the last seven games, he has returned 17 kickoffs for 406 yards and a 23.9 average. He has raised his average to 21.7 yards per return and ranks eighth all-time in SEC history with 1676 kickoff return yards. His 23.9 career average ranks third all-time in SEC history. With 24 more yards, he will become only the seventh player in league history to reach 1700 yards. Twice this season he has posted over 100 yards in kickoff returns. He posted 116 yards on five returns against Alabama and rolled up the second-best day of his career with 144 yards versus Kentucky. He has four 100-yard return games in his career.
