TODAY'S GAME
The #2 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols return to action after an 11-day break for final exams traveling to a sold-out Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto, Calif., to face a red-hot #6/5 ranked Stanford Cardinal team who has been off for two weeks for final exams. The game with Stanford is UT's fourth stop on an eight-game month-long road trip.
IN OUR LAST GAME
Tasha Butts and Head Trainer Jenny Moshak lead a bench celebration. |
The #2 ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers stayed on the road and traveled to Chestnut Hill, Mass., where they defeated BIG EAST foe Boston College, 75-66 on Dec. 5. The Lady Vols crept out to a seven-point, 13-6 lead with six minutes gone in the game. Sophomore reserve Courtney McDaniel gave the Lady Vols an 11-point lead, 27-16, with 8:30 showing in the first half. UT went cold over the last six minutes of the opening stanza as BC outscored the Lady Vols 13-4 to trail by just four points at the break, 37-33. UT shot a sizzling 63% in the first half connecting on 15-24 shots. The Lady Vols doubled their lead over the Eagles, 43-35 (eight points) when Michelle Snow connected on a couple of charity tosses with 17:12 to go. But BC would not go away. The Eagles closed to within a bucket, 47-45, with 9:17 left but UT hung on to its slim lead and fashioned a 19-5 run over the next four minutes to go up by 16 points (66-50 at 5:04). Undaunted, BC fought back and trailed 64-68 with 1:46 to go and 66-70 with 36.8 ticks left. It took some serious free throw shooting by the Lady Vols in the final minute to seal the win as Kara Lawson and Gwen Jackson combined for seven of eight charity tosses for the victory. For the game, four Lady Vols were in double-figures led by Lawson's game high 16 points. Joining her in double-digits were Jackson with 15 points, Michelle Snow with 14 points and Brittany Jackson with 11 points. Snow led all UT rebounders with nine boards. The key stat of the game for the Lady Vols was converting 20-23 free throws (87%). Tennessee committed 26 turnovers on 16 Boston College steals. Snow hammered four BC shots. In her UT starting debut, rookie Loree Moore was credited with three steals while handing out six assists. The Lady Vols connected on just 44% of their field goals but found the range for 54% of three-pointers. BC became the first team to out-rebound UT in the 2001-02 season taking a 37-35 advantage.
CONFERENCE CALL
This season, Tennessee will take on teams from 11 different conferences.
LADY VOLS ON TELEVISION
Eighteen Lady Vol regular season games will be on television this year. Upcoming games on TV in 2001-02 include Stanford and Duke (FOX).
ON THIS DAY
On Dec. 16th, the Lady Vols have produced a 7-1 record all-time. The Lady Vols have a 1-0 record at home, a 3-1 record away and 3-0 slate at a neutral site. UT's most recent game on this day was a 90-72 loss at Stanford during the 1995-96 season.
LOOKING BACK
Last year at this time, the Lady Vols were 8-0 and had just defeated Memphis, 98-60, in Knoxville.
TIMES HAVE CHANGED
Back on Dec. 16, 1977, the Lady Vols played back-to-back games against Pitt and Tennessee Tech in the Miss. Univ. for Women Xmas Tourney. UT won both games.
OUR SCHEDULE THIS WEEK
After an 11-day hiatus for final exams, the Lady Vols return to the court this week traveling to #6/5 Stanford (Dec. 16) and DePaul (Dec. 19). Tennessee began its month of traveling on the "Big Cities Tour" at the end of November. UT first visited Washington, D.C., where the Lady Vols defeated #21/20 George Washington Univ., 88-57, in a sold-out Charles E. Smith Center on Nov. 27. Tennessee returned home briefly before traveling to Orlando, Fla., for the Honda Elite Four on Dec. 2 at Disney World and hung a 93-56 loss on the #8/9 N.C. State Wolfpack on ESPN. UT then traveled "back east" for a hard-fought 75-66 victory over BIG EAST foe Boston College.
OUR BAGS ARE STILL PACKED
The Tennessee Lady Vols will be on the road for eight consecutive games traveling to Washington, D.C., Orlando, Chestnut Hill, Mass., Palo Alto, Calif., Chicago, Atlanta, Memphis and Gainesville, Fla., before finally returning home on Jan. 5, 2002, to face top-ranked Connecticut in Thompson-Boling Arena. Thus far, Tennessee is 3-0 on the "Big Cities Tour."
WELCOME BACK ASHLEY AND SUSAN KING, TOO
Today's contest at Stanford will be a welcome back to the court for two of the top sophomores in the country. Tennessee's Ashley Robinson and Stanford's Susan King were both victims of torn anterior cruciate ligaments in the last year. A little over a week after putting up a career high 21 points against Tennessee in Knoxville, King tore her right ACL on Dec. 27, 2000, in a game at Oklahoma and missed the remainder of her rookie campaign. Robinson's ACL injury was to her left knee and occurred on June 30, 2001, while she was completing a drill in basketball camp.
FLORIDA HAS BEEN SET
The Tennessee at Florida women's basketball game has been finally set for Jan. 3 at 6:00 p.m. Florida officials wanted to wait until bowl bids had been extended.
GIMME A BREAK OR TWO
With the Stanford game, the Lady Vols will begin a stretch of eight out of 10 games versus ranked opponents over the next 31 days. DePaul and Memphis are the only unranked foes appearing on the schedule until after Jan. 20, 2002. Along the way UT will face #1 UConn, #6/5 Stanford, #8 Duke, #20 Florida, #21 LSU, #23/24 South Carolina, #24/25 Old Dominion and #25 Auburn.
UCONN DUCAT STOCKING STUFFERS
As of Dec. 12, 19,346 tickets have been snapped up for the showdown between top-ranked Connecticut and second-ranked Tennessee on Jan. 5, 2002, in Knoxville, Tenn. Capacity at the Thompson-Boling Arena is listed as 24,535 leaving 5,189 tickets as wonderful stocking stuffers. Don't delay! The holidays are right around the corner!

THE SERIES
UT leads the series with Stanford, 12-4. Some of the classic clashes include: the Cardinal winning a one-point overtime affair in Palo Alto in Dec. 1991 (96-95), UT returning the favor on a neutral court in Hawaii in Dec. 1992 in a 74-73 overtime, and two weeks later (Dec.21), the Lady Vols recording a 84-79 victory in Knoxville. UT won for the first at Maples Pavilion on the Stanford campus on Dec. 3, 1993, 81-75. Last year, UT had to rally in the final five minutes of the game for the 63-58 victory in Knoxville.
VERSUS THE PAC 10
Tennessee has taken on nine teams from the PAC 10 Conference all-time and sports a 42-12 record. Only three teams have claimed victories over UT - Southern Cal (seven times), Stanford (four times) and UCLA (once).
LAST TIME AT MAPLES
Loree Moore goes up for a shot under a George Washington defender. |
Fifth-ranked Tennessee recorded a tough, 79-73 win over #22/23 Stanford on Nov. 26, 1999 in Palo Alto, Calif. It marked just the second time (ever) that UT claimed a win in the Maples Pavilion. Tennessee jumped out to an early 11-point lead, 19-8, with 11:57 showing in the first half. SU chipped away at UT, and tied the score at 31-all at the 3:29 mark. UT went into the locker room trailing at the half, 41-39. In the second stanza, the Cardinal quickly led by four points (45-41 at 8:20). The Lady Vols grabbed the lead back with 11:49 showing, 54-52, and engaged in a tug-of-war with Stanford down the stretch. SU broke free of the Lady Vols with 3:03 left and extended its lead to five points, 73-68. But solid defense, rebounding and free throws (6-6) proved to be the difference for UT in the final minutes of the game. The Lady Vols turned a five-point deficit into a six-point victory in three minutes as Semeka Randall, Kara Lawson, Tamika Catchings and Michelle Snow all made big plays down the stretch en route to the win. Four UT players reached double-figures led by Snow's 18 points off of the bench. Also in extra digits were Catchings 17 points, Randall 16 points and Lawson 14 points. UT outrebounded the Cardinal 40-26. and claimed 13 steals off of 18 Stanford TO's.

The Stanford Cardinal are off to a terrific 8-0 start behind the solid play of 6-1 senior forward Lindsey Yamasaki (18.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and 6-2 sophomore forward Nicole Powell (16.6 ppg, 9.6 rpg). Yamasaki has led the team in scoring in five games erupting for 27 points against Indiana while Powell has paced SU's scoring efforts in three games. The last time out, she blasted Santa Clara for 29 points and 15 rebounds.

OUR LAST MEETING WITH STANFORD
The #2 ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers allowed the #15/22 Stanford Cardinal to control 35 minutes of play on Dec. 17, 2000, in Thompson-Boling Arena, before the Big Orange claimed a 63-58 decision in the final minutes of play. The Lady Vol faithful stood and clapped for UT's first basket until the 16:29 mark in the first half as Stanford jumped out 5-2. UT inched out to a five-point, 17-12 lead at the 10:17 mark but the Cardinal reclaimed the lead just three minutes later (21-19 at 7:27). While UT committed miscues and fouls, Stanford grabbed a seven-point advantage (31-24) with two minutes before the half. UT cut the deficit to 31-28 at the break - it marked the first time of the 2000-01 season that UT had not led at the half. Tennessee recorded icy 27% shooting from the field to open the game. In the second stanza, Stanford maintained its lead all the way to the 2:32 mark. The Cardinal pushed its advantage over the Lady Vols to eight points four times in the second half (last at 10:09). However, after a media time out with 5:33 showing and Stanford leading 58-51, UT's defense finally shut the door on the California visitors. A Michelle Snow basket with 2:31 to go gave UT its first lead of the second half, 59-58. Free throws and defense provided the win. On the afternoon, just two Lady Vols reached double-figure scoring led by Snow with 18 points off the bench. Also in extra digits was Tamika Catchings with 11. Catchings with a dozen and Snow with 11 led all UT rebounders. UT shot 32% FG and a horrible 57% FT while missing 17 charity tosses. UT outrebounded Stanford, 48-41. Rookie Ashley Robinson was credited with five blocked shots.
AVERAGE SCORE
The average score of all UT-Stanford games is 81.5 (Tennessee) and 74.3 (Stanford). At Maples, the Cardinal average is 83.8 to Tennessee's 79.6 in five games
UT PLAYER AVERAGES IN GAMES VS. STANFORD
Senior center Michelle Snow leads the Lady Vols with an average of 14.3 ppg and 6.7 rpg in three games versus Stanford. Junior Kara Lawson is the only other Lady Vol averaging double-figures against the Cardinal as she averages 10.5 ppg and 2.5 rpg. Junior forward Gwen Jackson is next best with 6.0 ppg and 6.0 rpg.
THE TOP 25 POLLS

| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
AP POLL NOTES
The Associated Press women's Top 25 basketball poll released on Jan. 1, 2001, marked the 400th appearance by the Tennessee Lady Vols. Since the poll was started in 1976, UT has failed to appear in just 14 polls through the years. Currently, UT has been ranked in 287 consecutive polls and since the 1986-87 season, the Lady Vols have been in the top 10 for all but one poll. UT is the only team to have been ranked every year for the last 26 years in the AP poll. UT has appeared at least once per season over the poll's history.
OLD HOME WEEK
It will be catch-up time for a number of Tennessee Lady Vols and Stanford Cardinal. This past summer, UT's Loree Moore and SU's Nicole Powell were members of the bronze medallist USA entry at the FIBA Junior Women's World Championship team in the Czech Republic. In late August, Tennessee's Kara Lawson was the team captain of the gold medallist USA squad at the World University Games in Beijing, China. She was joined on that squad by Cardinal standouts Lindsey Yamasaki and Cori Enghusen.
OLYMPIC GOLD & HALL OF FAME
Tennessee's Pat Summitt and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer share a lot in common. Both have brought home gold medals as USA Olympic coaches - Summitt in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and VanDerveer in the 1996 Games in Atlanta. Both are Hall of Famers as well. Summitt was inducted in the inaugural class of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999, while VanDerveer is among eight inductees of the Class of 2002.
TITLE TIME
All-time, just twenty NCAA women's basketball titles have been handed out and the Tennessee and Stanford programs have collected eight championships. UT won in 1987, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1997 and 1998 while SU won in 1990 and 1992. The first Cardinal title came in UT's Thompson-Boling Arena as Stanford rolled over Virginia and Auburn.
SELL-OUT CITY
Stanford announced on Monday, Dec. 10 that the game with Tennessee was an advance sell-out. UT's game with George Washington (Nov. 27) was also an advance sell-out while the Lady Vols and UT-Chattanooga attracted the largest crowd ever to watch the Mocs play, 9,113. Look for all of UT's all-time sold-out appearances to be a new newsy note real soon.
LADY VOL WATCH BOX
Kara Lawson needs just 24 points to become the 26th member of the Lady Vols' 1000-point club.
OUR CALIFORNIA GIRL
Lady Vol rookie Loree Moore (Carson, CA/Narbonne H.S.) is Tennessee's first player from the state of California.
GOT A LITTLE ROAD STREAK
The last time UT lost on the road was on Jan. 17, 2000, at Georgia, 78-51, since then the team has won 19 consecutive road games.
WHEN THE MUSIC STOPS, WE'LL HAVE 5 STARTERS
Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt has indicated that she might tinker with the starting line-up for the Stanford game. Look for sophomore LaToya Davis to be a potential player in the starting five replacing rookie Shyra Ely or possibly April McDivitt.
CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME
When the action down the stretch got tight at Boston College, the Lady Vols finally showed some spunk at the free throw line canning 20-23 tosses (.870). Tennessee has been plagued by charity stripe defense intermittently during the early going - 15 misses against George Washington, 11 vs. Southern Cal, 10 each against Louisiana Tech and N.C. State.

A GRUELING STRETCH
Traditionally, Tennessee teams take most of its losses in the month of December when Coach Pat Summitt loads up on some tough non-conference opposition to prepare the team for the rigors of March and the postseason. WHAT'S UP WITH #43 AND #33?
Lady Vol fans might be confused when they see #43 step onto the court this season. Sophomore Ashley Robinson is #43, right? Well, Robinson was #43 as a rookie but switched to her favorite number, 33, after Kristen "Ace" Clement graduated last season. Rookie Shyra Ely will don number 43 this season.
HOW 'BOUT THAT. . .
ROOKIES REPRESENT
Freshman forward Shyra Ely was joined in the starting line-up for the Boston College game by fellow rookie, Loree Moore who started at point guard.
GOOD NEWS
Senior center Shalon Pillow, who injured her left knee midway through practice on Thurs., Nov. 29, was cleared to play on Dec. 3. Team orthopaedist Dr. William T. Youmans cleared Pillow after reading her MRI and re-evaluating her knee on Dec. 3. Pillow suffered a bone bruise to the left knee. Lady Vol starting guard/forward Tasha Butts underwent an MRI of her left knee on Dec. 3 to determine the cause of her knee pain. Butts' pain is a result of degenerative changes in the knee. She was cleared to play as well.
DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE
Junior forward Gwen Jackson turned in the first Lady Vol double-double of the season with a 14-point and 12-rebound performance against #8/9 N.C. State.
BENCH INTENSITY
UT's bench did not find a match in the N.C. State reserves. UT's bench accounted for 35 points, 12 assists and 14 steals while the NCSU subs added 12 points, 10 rebounds and 12 miscues.
GOT OUR 300TH VICTORY AGAINST A RANKED TEAM
The Tennessee Lady Vols recorded their 300th all-time win versus a ranked team with the victory over fifth-ranked Louisiana Tech, 90-75, on Nov. 23. The Lady Vols now stand 302-124 (.709) overall against ranked foes since the polls began in 1976.
BC WAS 765
The victory over Boston College was Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt's 765th of her 28-year career. With 765 wins, she currently ranks 10th among all coaches (men's or women's) in all-time victories. She will move into ninth place and pass the legendary Hank Iba (Oklahoma State) with three more wins. Iba was 767-338 during his career.
The only woman Summitt trails behind is Jody Conradt of the University of Texas who started this season in her 33rd year of coaching with 766 wins. Conradt is off to a 6-1 start on the year and currently has 772 victories.
ELITE COMPANY
When Pat Summitt started freshman forward Shyra Ely against Tennessee-Chattanooga on Nov. 16, 2001, it marked only the ninth time in her coaching career that a freshman started her very first game at Tennessee. The list of opening day rookie starters: Ashley Robinson 2000, Gwen Jackson 1999, Semeka Randall 1997, Kyra Elzy 1996, Chamique Holdsclaw 1995, Tiffani Johnson 1994, Bridgette Gordon and Sheila Frost 1985.
146 WINS IN OUR LAST 156 GAMES
The Lady Vols have won an amazing 146 games in their last 156 basketball contests (.935 winning percentage) spanning five seasons (starting with NCAA Tournament play in 1997). UT was 6-0 in the 1997 NCAA Tourney, ran the table with a 39-0 record in 1997-98, turned in a 31-3 worksheet in 1998-99, a 33-4 mark during the 1999-2000 season, a 31-3 mark last season and a 6-0 mark in 2001-02.
LADY VOL STREAKS
The last time the Lady Vols lost at home was against Connecticut, 74-67, on Jan. 8, 2000 -- since then, the team has won 26 consecutive home games. The last time UT lost on the road was on Jan. 17, 2000, at Georgia, 78-51, since then the team has won 19 consecutive road games. The last time the Lady Vols lost on a neutral court was against Xavier, 80-65, in the 2001 NCAA Mideast Regional semifinals on Mar. 24, 2001. Since then, UT has won one game on a neutral court.
UT'S LAST LOSS TO AN UNRANKED TEAM...?
When is the last time Tennessee lost to an unranked team? That would have been to Auburn on Mar. 2, 1997 at the SEC Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn.
WHO'S THAT LADY (VOL)?
The thousands of Lady Vol fans who were in attendance at The McKenzie Arena on Nov. 16th - opening night of the 2001-02 season - in Chattanooga, witnessed the debut of another outstanding Tennessee rookie class. Shyra Ely became a rare Lady Vol rookie starter playing in place of injured junior Gwen Jackson - Ely scored a team-leading 16 points and grabbed six offensive boards. Point guard Loree Moore logged 24 minutes and added 15 points and snagged five steals. Forward Michelle Munoz calmly nailed a trey for her first bucket and finished with 13 points and six rebounds. Finally, Brittany Jackson scored seven points to go along with three steals. In all, the rookie crew was responsible for 51 of UT's 97 points and 20 of the Lady Vols' 54 rebounds.
THE POLLING PLACE
In the first Associated Press and USA TODAY/ESPN polls of the year on Nov. 5, the Tennessee Lady Vols began the 2001-02 season as the number three (AP) and number two (USA TODAY/ESPN) ranked team in the country. It marked the sixth time that UT has started the season in the second spot in at least one of the polls.
IS IT TOUGH ENOUGH?
The Lady Vols 2001-02 schedule is littered with teams who were ranked in the preseason Associated Press and ESPN/USA TODAY Top 25 polls. The Lady Vols will face #1/1 UConn, #3/3 Vanderbilt (twice), #5/4 Duke, #6/6 Louisiana Tech, #9/9 Stanford, #10/11N.C.
