KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
The University of Tennessee women's basketball team has been tabbed as the second-ranked team in the nation in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today preseason polls.
The AP top-25 media poll has Lady Vol rival Connecticut in the top spot with Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt third, Oklahoma fourth and Duke fifth. Louisiana Tech, Texas Tech, Iowa State, Stanford and North Carolina State round out the top 10.
The top three spots are the same in the ESPN/USA Today rankings as UConn, Tennessee and Vanderbilt head the group, with Duke and Oklahoma switching places to fourth and fifth, respectively. UT rival Louisiana Tech is tabbed sixth, with Texas Tech, Iowa State, Purdue and Stanford rounding out the top 10.
The Southeastern Conference boasts five schools in the ESPN/USA Today coaches rankings and four programs in the AP media poll. Vanderbilt, Florida and Georgia join Tennessee in both listings, while Louisiana State failed to receive a media nod.
Overall the Lady Vols are scheduled to face 10 Associated Press top-25 teams, 11 ESPN/USA Today top-25 squads and three members of the top five in both polls during the 2001-02 regular season.
