Alex Walls connected on a 34-yard field goal with 13 seconds left to give the Vols a 19-17 victory at Memphis. A 44-yard kickoff return by Leonard Scott , after the Tigers took a 17-16 lead, helped set up the game-winning kick.
The Vols drew first blood on a Walls 32-yard field goal, but it was Memphis that led at the break 10-3 following a 10-yard touchdown pass from Scott Schere to Dernice Wherry and a White 43-yard field goal on the final play of the first half.
The Tennessee defense took control in the second half as they forced Memphis into three-and-out on its first two possesions as the offense tacked up 10 points for a slim 13-10 advantage. Walls hit his second field of the day, this time from 30 yards out. Later, Casey Clausen connected with Donte? Stallworth on a 60-yard pass that set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Travis Stephens.
Following a Memphis fumble midway through the fourth quarter, Walls hit his third field goal of the day to give the Vols a 16-10. Punt returner Ryan Johnson gave the Tigers new life with a 50-yard return to the Tennessee 36. Five plays later, Scherer hooked up with Billy Kendall for a 17-16 lead.
