ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Brandon Crump scored a career-high 16 points and Tennessee overcame a first-half shooting problems to beat Alaska Anchorage 74-54 Friday in the consolation bracket of the Great Alaska Shootout.
Tennessee (2-1) trailed early in the second half, but pulled away with strong frontcourt play.
"Alaska came with more intensity in the first half," Tennessee coach Buzz Peterson said. "I can stand being beat, but I can't stand being outworked."
Crump scored eight points and Elgrace Wilborn and Ron Slay combined for 19 second-half points. The Volunteers outrebounded the Seawolves 45-27, with Wilborn grabbing 11 and Vincent Yarbrough nine. Today's game was the first action of the season for Slay who missed the Vols two exhibition games and first two games of the season with a stress fracture of his lower right leg.
Alaska Anchorage (0-2) took a 30-27 lead when Nelson Williams hit a jump shot near the top of the key and put back a miss with a little less than 2 minutes gone in the second half.
But Slay keyed an 11-2 run with a pair of field goals close to the basket and a 3-pointer at the top of the key that put the Volunteers up 43-32 with 12 minutes to play.
Tennessee used a 13-2 run to take its biggest lead of the first half, 19-8, with just under 10 minutes left. The game turned into a free-throw contest and when Peter Bullock hit two from the line with 1:13 left in the half, the Seawolves took a 26-25 lead.
Tennessee shot just 28 percent from the field in the first half, including 1-of-7 from 3-point range. The Volunteers found their shooting eye in the second half, hitting 63 percent. The Vols, who were outrebounded 34-26 in the loss to Marquette, enjoyed a 45-27 advantage today, including a season-high 17 offensive boards.
The Vols will take on St. John's Saturday for fifth-place in the Great Alaska Shootout. The RedStorm defeated Oregon State 66-63 in second-round action. St. John's leads the all-time series with the Vols 4-3. UT won the last meeting 97-80 in Knoxville to open the 1979-80 season.
