KNOXVILLE (Oct. 8) -- Tennessee did not practice Monday, taking advantage of the open week to visit four Knoxville area hospitals. The guest appearances, in association with UT's CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, have become part of the Tennessee tradition of community service under head coach Phillip Fulmer.
"I have always felt it's important to give back to the community," Fulmer said. "The community has been so supportive of us. I think it does make our players more accountable, more responsible and more a part of our community by getting out there and touching people and getting to know people and people being able to call on them when they need them."
UT players were divided into four equal groups for the visits to Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, East Tennessee Children's Hospital, St. Mary's Medical Center and the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Tennessee players were scheduled to make visits during this season's first open week (Sept. 17), but those had to be postponed because of the terrorist attacks.
