Dietrich, Toledo Advance at Region III Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.-- Tennessee's Mark Dietrich and Mario Toledo advanced to the round of 16 Friday at the Omni Hotels Region III Championships being held at the Varsity Tennis Center on the UT campus. The field was treated to a beautiful, but cold day Friday in Knoxville, where eight of the 16 seeded singles players advanced to the round of 16.
Not seeded among the top 16, but one of the tournament favorites for certain, is Tennessee freshman Mark Dietrich. The Memphis native has continued to improve in the fall season and he kept on rolling Friday. Dietrich ousted (17-32) seed Bobby Reynolds of Vanderbilt 6-3, 6-4 to advance. Dietrich will take on Georgia's Nicholas Boeker Saturday, where a win could possibly put him in a quarterfinal match with team mate Mario Toledo.
The No. 2-seeded Toledo has seen a resurgance in his game during this tournament, where he has turned back three straight opponents to advance to the round of 16. Toledo defeated South Florida's Nadim Naser Friday 7-5, 7-6 to advance and face Florida's Eleazar Magallan in the round of 16. Tennessee sophomore Simon Rea has also played well as of late, but came up short Friday against No. 8-seeded Brandon Wagner of Georgia 6-4, 6-3.
Friday also opened the doubles segment of the event, where three Vol tandems were slated to play before the duo of Wade Orr and Dietrich pulled out due to injury. The pair of Andy Crews and Michael Maddox began well with a 9-8 victory over UAB's Zaman and VanderMerwe.The tandem then took on Florida's
Greenstein and Magallan, where they fell 8-5. The No. 7-seeded duo of Simon Rea and Mario Toledo also began play Friday. The pair received a first round
bye before defeating Austin Peay's Pancho and Rutsche 8-2 in the second round. Toledo and Rea will take on Vanderbilt's Harris and Reynolds in Saturday's
round of 16.
The Vols will be back in action Saturday at the Varsity Tennis Center. There will be two doubles rounds and a round of singles beginning at 9 A.M. Admission is Free.
