KNOXVILLE, Tenn.-- Led by junior Ian Parnaby's 66-71--137, the Tennessee is tied for second at the 2001 Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions after 36 holes of the 54-hole event. The Vols fired a 287-278--565, and are seven strokes back of Toledo (558). The tournament is being held at Cherokee Country Club (par 70, 6,296 yards).
Parnaby finished the first day as the Vols' top scorer with a 137. Freshman Ross McGowan, who is competing as an individual, is tied for sixth with a 71-67--138. Freshman David Skinns is tied for 13th after firing a 141. Junior Andrew Pratt rounds out the Vols in the top 20 with a two-round score of 142 to tie him for 18th. Other UT scores include, senior Andrew Black (t-39) with a 147 and fellow seniors Jimmy White and Jason Powell tied for 47th with scores of 48. Powell is also competing as an individual.
After the Vols finished the morning round with a +7 (287) good for fifth-place, head coach Jim Kelson said his team did an excellent job of stepping up during the afternoon round.
"We stepped up this afternoon and showed a lot of heart," Kelson said. "During the morning round we did not play well, but I thought the guys did a nice job of turning things around. I am very proud of their efforts. Ian and Ross both played very well today. I thought Andrew Pratt came back and gutted out two pretty good rounds as well."
In the individual portion of the competition, Alabama's Nick Rousey leads with a 70-64-134 heading into Tuesday's final round. Rousey's second round score of 64 broke the tournament record for the lowest individual round. The record was previously held by four participants at 65. He also tied the record for the lowest two-round score with his 134. He shares the record with former Vol Boomer Erick, who broke the record in 1994. Other top individuals include Nathan Goulding (135) of LSU in second, Kyle Bradley (136) of the College of Charleston in third and Parnaby and David Jones of Toledo tied for fourth with 137.
Toledo leads the tournament after firing scores of 277-281--558. The Rockets' two-round score of 558 broke the old two-round record, which was held by Virginia (563). Tennessee, who is in second with a 565, also broke two of its team records in the tournament. UT's two-round score of 565 breaks the old record of 566 from 1994, and the second round score of 278 breaks the lowest round for a Vol team, which was 281, also from 1994. Other top teams in the tournament include Auburn (566), Alabama (567) and the College of Charleston (568).
The tournament's final round will be held Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. Admission for the final round is free and open to the public.
