Following today's 35-24 win Alabama leads the series against Tennessee 42-35-7, but UT now leads in Tuscaloosa with a 3-2 ... The Vols have won the last seven meetings dating back to 1995 ... Attendance: 83,818 ... Tennessee improves to 4-1 (3-1 SEC), while Alabama falls to 3-4 (2-3 SEC)...Tennessee plays host to South Carolina next Saturday at Neyland Stadium ... The game will kickoff at 6 p.m. (EDT) on ESPN2.
Tennessee becomes the first school ever to record seven consecutive wins over tradition-rich Alabama ... Entering today's game, Tennessee and The University of the South (Sewanee) were the only schools in history to defeat Alabama six straight times ... Sewanee won six in a row over the Tide from 1896 to 1911 and had a nine-game unbeaten streak (8-0-1) from 1986 to 1914 ... Texas posted a seven-game unbeaten streak vs. Alabama, but did not win six straight games ... Tennessee has not lost a game in the state of Alabama since 1991-a 24-19 loss to Alabama at Birmingham's Legion Field ... Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer is the nation's winningest active head coach...Following today's game, Fulmer has a 88-19 (.822) mark now in his 10th season at his alma mater ... Fulmer's overall SEC record is now 59-13, including a 25-4 mark against SEC West opponents ... Fulmer is now 8-1 against Alabama.
Senior tailback Travis Stephens gained 162 yards on 33 carries today ... Today's effort was the fourth time in five games this season that Stephens has surpassed the 100-yard barrier and the fifth time in his career ... Stephens entered today's game as the SEC's leading rusher (3rd in NCAA), averaging 147.0 yards per game ... Stephens 60-yard TD run in the second quarter gave the Vols a 14-3 advantage ... Today's 60-yard rush was Stephens third this season of at least 40 yards ... His season-long was a 64-yarder against Georgia (career-long: 80 vs. Kentucky, 2000) ... Tennessee is now 71-4-2 since 1990 with a 100-yard rusher (3-1 this season)
WR Donte' Stallworth returned to action for the first time since the season opener against Syracuse Sept. 1 and made his presence known immediately ... Stallworth caught passes in his first two plays back today in UT's opening scoring drive, snagging an 11-yarder for a first down and a 21-yard TD from Clausen on the next play ... It was Stallworth's second TD catch of the season--He caught a 37-yarder on the first play from scrimmage this season against Syracuse... Stallworth missed the Vols' last three games with a broken left wrist and is still wearing a protective cast ... For the game Stallworth caught 5 passes for 80 yards.
QB Casey Clausen completed 21-of-28 for 293 yards with 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions today ... Clausen also recorded a rushing TD, going in from one yard to put UT up 28-24 with 6:06 remaining ... Clausen is now 10-2 as a starter at quarterback for the Vols and 8-1 vs. SEC teams (2-0 vs. Alabama)... He has a 5-1 mark as the Vols' QB when throwing for at least 200 yards (3-1 in 2001) ... Clausen was 4-of-4 for 58 yards on the Vols' opening scoring drive, including a 21-yard TD pass to Donte Stallworth to give UT a quick 7-0 advantage...He was 11-of-12 for 103 yards in the first half.
Despite missing much of practice last week with a foot injury, WR Kelley Washington hauled in 4 catches for 93 yards today, including a 55-yarder from Clausen late in the fourth quarter for a crucial first down a field position change ... Washington is the Vols' leading receiver this season with 33 catches for 576 yards and 2 TDs.
TE Jason Witten recorded his first career TD catch in the third quarter to give UT a 21-17 lead ... Whitten had high 7 catches and 91 receiving yards today-both career-highs ... Witten's previous career-high was 21 yards vs. Georgia and he had 4 catches at Arkansas earlier this season ... Freshman WR Montrell Jones caught the first pass of his UT career in the second quarter-a 16-yarder for a first down ... Senior TE John Finlayson caught his first pass of the season (10 yards-for a first down) ...
Tennessee's defense recorded 3 sacks today, giving the Vols 15 in five games this season ... Defensive backs Jabari Greer (-8) Andre Lott (-10) recorded sacks on back-to-back plays in the second quarter to stop an Alabama drive ... LB Kevin Burnett added a sack on the Tide's final possession ... The Vols gave up their first rushing TD this season in the third quarter ... Tennessee entered the game as the only NCAA Division I-A school that had not allowed a rushing TD ... The score was also Alabama's first rushing TD against the Vols in 12 quarters.
