Tennis Vols take Season Opener From UTC

The Vols (1-0) opened the contest by winning all three doubles matches to take the doubles point. The duo of Mark Parsons and Adam Carey, ranked No. 6 nationally, won their No. 1 doubles match against Jason Ontog and Jesse Koti 8-4. Peter Handoyo and Andy Crews, ranked 13th, took a hard-fought contest from Fungai Munjanja and John Hangstefer 9-8(4). In the No. 3 match, Paul Podbury and Wade Orr won easily over Brandon Abney and James Dickerson 8-2.
Handoyo (No. 9), Parsons, Carey (No. 60), Podbury (No. 55), Orr and Crews won the Vols' singles matches in the Nos. 1-6 positions respectively. Every Vol won in straight sets with the hardest-fought match coming between Handoyo and Jason Ontog. Handoyo won 7-6(4), 6-4 in a 2 1/2 hour marathon. "Pete (Handoyo) played well," Mahony said. "He had beaten Ontog more easily in the fall, but Ontog came to play today. Pete showed the type of determination that we will be looking for all spring."
The Vols' next match will be at the SEC Indoor Tournament Jan. 18-21 in Norcross, Ga.
