HEAD COACHES' QUOTES
TENNESSEE COACH JERRY GREEN:
"That was the closest to a football game I've been involved in. I'm
glad Coach Fulmer was here. They were the most aggressive team I've seen in
33 years of coaching. By aggressive, I'm talking about setting screens, blocking
out, chucking and hitting cutters. From the sidelines it looked pretty aggressive
to me.
"We had trouble adjusting to it. We built a 19-point lead and then had trouble because of poor decisions and not shooting well. We hit a wall in the second half, and South Carolina was aggressive offensively and defensively at that point.
"We did what we needed to do down the stretch to win the game. If we continue with our flow, we are hard to guard. South Carolina is fundamentally sound, but we've got a lot of mature people. Charles Hathaway looks very mature in the way he is playing.
"Tony Harris is more patient, studies the game more and has a tendency not to turn it over."
SOUTH CAROLINA COACH EDDIE FOGLER:
"We had our chances, but couldn't score. Tennessee is huge and quick
inside. The missed tip at 66-55 was big. You have to make those when you're
down 10.
"I'm pleased this team hasn't quit. We have 10 guys who can play. All 10 can contribute. I was somewhat pleased with our emotion, effort and focus considering our schedule. That last shot of the first half takes something out of you.
"We've made comebacks every game we've played, particularly Tennessee Tech, Providence and Kentucky. I'd like to be up like that for a change. Tennessee's first half was terrific. We didn't stop the dunks off transition. I won't compare Tennessee, Florida and Kentucky. We have to play them all again. They're all very good. On the three-pointer at the half, we were worried about the lob or the corner. That was my fault. That hurt. It was wide open."
