Leaverton Named to AFCA Good Works Team
September 19, 2000 | Football
Two 11-man teams are chosen by the AFCA, one comprised of Division I-A players and a combined team from Divisions I-AA, II, III and NAIA. Leaverton, a native of Midland, Texas, was one of five Good Works Team members from the Southeastern Conference, the most of any conference in the country. Leaverton, a Ray Guy award candidate as the nation's top punter, is averaging 43.0 yards per punt this season and has had 5 punts of at least 50 yards in the Vols' first two games and backed up the opposition behind their own 20-yardline on 8 occasions.
Tennessee Coach Phillip Fulmer said Leaverton is very deserving of the honor and is a model for student-athletes across the nation.
David has certainly been a great example, not only to our football team, but an example for all of college football and to all young players who are interested in being college athletes because he is the right kind of young man to follow as an example, Fulmer said. He has been very active in the community, very active in some different Christian organizations and is certainly a leader on the team, which is reflected by him being elected captain.
Other SEC players joining Leaverton on the squad included Kentucky defensive end Matt Layow, Gerogia running back Brett Millican, Ole Miss quarterback Romaro Miller and South Carolina quarterback Kevin Sides.
