Former Vol Augie Ojeda Called Up By Chicago Cubs
June 01, 2000 | Baseball
Former University of Tennessee shortstop Augie Ojeda, who played with the
Vols in 1996 before being drafted in the 13th round by the Baltimore
Orioles, had his contract purchased by the Chicago Cubs from the Triple-A
Iowa Cubs May 31.
Ojeda, wearing uniform No. 55, was on the bench for the June 1 contest against the Atlanta Braves. He is looking to make his major league debut.
The 25-year-old batted .242 in 49 games for Iowa with 10 doubles, 4 homers, 14 RBI and 8 stolen bases. He was leading Pacific Coast League shortstops with a .978 fielding percentage at the time of his promotion, committing 4 errors in 184 total chances. He averaged 3.8 total chances per game and participated in 17 double plays.
Ojeda, who played for Team USA during the 1996 Olympics, was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles' organization last December in a trade for minor league pitcher Richard Negrette.
