Columbia, S.C. - Each South Carolina Gamecock starter got at least one hit as they pounded out 15 in 9-1 triumph over the Tennessee Volunteers at Sarge Frye Field. With Kentucky's 7-3 victory over Vanderbilt and UT's second straight loss to the Gamecocks, the Vols were eliminated from the SEC Tournament.
South Carolina improved to 49-6 and 24-5 in the Southeastern Conference, while Tennessee fell to 40-22 and 10-17 in league action.
Peter Bauer improved to 11-1 on the season as he worked eight innings, allowing one run on 10 hits.
Jamie Bennett (10-4) was saddled with loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits in five innings of work. Brad Love pitched the final three innings for the Vols.
With two stolen bases in the seventh, Stevie Daniel set the Tennessee stolen base record with 56, bettering Clay Greene's mark of 54 set in 1997. Jeff Christensen and Kris Bennett each had three hits in the 12-hit Volunteer attack.
South Carolina drew first blood on Brennan Dees' two-run home run in the first, then added two unearned runs in the second following a Stevie Daniel error and built a 5-0 lead on a Tripp Kelly sacrifice fly in the third.
Trailing 5-0, Tennessee squandered a scoring opportunity in the fourth as it stranded three runners after loading the bases on three consecutive one-out singles by John Massey, Justin Parker and Jeff Baumtrog. Ryan Moffett and Kris Bennett each hit infield pop ups to end the scoring threat.
Then in the fifth, Daniel scored UT's only run on a groundout by Brandon Hopkins after reaching on a fielders choice, moving to second Jeff Christensen's second hit of the game then advancing to third on Bauer's wild pitch.
The Gamecocks used three hits, including an RBI double by Kelly and a single by McBeth in taking a 7-1 lead after five. They tacked on two more in the eighth for a 9-1 advantage on Janowicz's triple and Drew Meyer's single that plated Janowicz.
Tennessee's season finale will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. EDT.
