Vols Retire Belmont, 6-5
April 05, 2000 | Baseball
Knoxville, Tenn. - With the tying and winning runs on base and no outs, Brandon Crowe retired the three batters he faced to preserve the Tennessee Volunteers 6-5 win over the Belmont Bruins.
The Bruins made things interesting in the ninth as the first five batters all reached safely on reliever Justin Parker's wildness. Greg Whittaker drew a lead off walk, Eric King reached on catcher's interference and Grant Martin got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Charlie Cordin worked Parker for the second walk of the inning and plated Whittaker for the Bruin's third run. King scored on wild pitch and Jerrod Smith's infield single scored Martin as the Bruins pulled to within 6-5. With no outs and Smith on first and Cordin on third, Crowe retired the next three batters on a foul out and two strikeouts to pick up his third save. Tennessee improved to 28-10, while Belmont fell to 17-18.
Marlyn Tisdale (2-0) picked up the win in three innings of work, while Brandon Jaggers (5-4) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in three innings. Tennessee took a quick 4-0 lead in the second on a two-out two-run single by Kris Bennett, followed by Chris Burke's two-run double.
Belmont tacked on a run in the third when Brummett singled home Martin who doubled to lead off the frame, and added another in the fifth on Cordin's triple off the center field wall to score Martin who singled for his third straight hit.
The Vols added a single run in the seventh on Jeff Christensen's run scoring base hit, and one more in the eighth on Jeff Baumtrog's solo home run.
Tennessee travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to face the Alabama Crimson Tide in a three-game series, Apr. 7-9.
