Vols Pound East Tennessee State 14-1

Knoxville, Tenn. (April 26)- Stevie Daniel went 3-for-3 with five runs scored, two doubles, a home run, three stolen bases and three RBI as the Tennessee Volunteers (35-17) defeated the East Tennessee State Buccaneers (15-25), 14-1, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Tennessee also stole nine bases and established a school record for stolen bases in a season with 175, bettering the old mark of 174 set in 1991.
Vol starter Jordan DeJong improved to 4-3 allowing one run on seven hits in five innings. Reid Casey (4-6) was saddled with the loss for the Buccaneers after allowing five runs in three innings.
The Volunteers scored in six of the first seven innings, using two four-run innings in the fourth and sixth to propel them to the victory. The Buccaneers scored their only run in the first when Raymond McBride singled home Ed Sparks who reached with a two-out base hit and moved to second on wild pitch. The Volunteers took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame on back-to-back home runs from Chris Burke and Daniel for a 2-1 lead.
A sacrifice fly by Kris Bennet and a steal of home on an attempted double by Ryan Case gave the Vols a 4-1 lead after two. Brandon Hopkins doubled home Daniel who walked and stole second and third for a 5-1 Tennessee lead in the third.
A four-run fourth inning, keyed by Daniel's two-run double extended the Vols lead to 9-1. Case's two-run double also keyed the four-run sixth, and Hal Bibee's double in the seventh scored Daniel for his fifth run and the 14th for the Vols. Tennessee travels to Mississippi State for a three-game Southeastern Conference series, Apr. 28-30. Game times for the series are 7:30 p.m., 7 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. EDT.
