Vol Golf Squad Prepares For Upcoming SEC Tournament
April 18, 2000 | Men's Golf
The 12 participating teams will play an 18-hole round each of the three days. Each squad has five participants and the four best scores each day will go towards the team total. The Vols will participate in practice rounds beginning Thursday, April 20. The Orange and White will look to senior Derrick Centers for leadership going into the tournament. Centers is the best contender for the Vols after posting five consecutive top-20 finishes during the spring. He currently possesses the ninth-best stroke average in the SEC with a 72.70. Centers finished tied for 15th at the 1999 SEC Championships.
The Vols have only two team titles and three individual titles during the history of the championship. Tennessee's team titles came in 1980 and 1990. Bert Greene (1964), Mickey Mabry (1972) and Mike Sposa (1990) make up the individual medal winners for the Orange and White.
Florida is the defending SEC team champion, having beaten second-place Georgia by seven strokes at last year's event at the Champion Trace Golf Club in Lexington, Ky. The Gators' Camilo Benedetti will have a chance to defend his individual title this season as he won last year's event by two shots over South Carolina's Kyle Thompson.
VOLS TO WATCH: (1) Derrick Centers, Sr. (2) Andrew Black, So. (3) Ian Parnaby, Fr. (4) Andrew Pratt, Fr. (5) Andy Brimer, Jr.
