Auburn Holds On To Defeat The Vols 7-6
April 16, 2000 | Baseball
Knoxville, Tenn. - Gabe Gross' two-run home run, his 11th of the season, helped stake the Auburn Tigers to a 7-0 lead in the third inning as they held on to defeat the Tennessee Volunteers, 7-6, before a crowd of 1,458 at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
The No. 11 Tigers improved to 34-10 and 11-7 in the Southeastern Conference, while the No. 23 Volunteers fell to 32-14 and 6-10 in the conference. Auburn became the first SEC team to sweep the Vols in Knoxville since LSU in 1997.
Tiger starter Hayden Gliemmo (3-1), working on a strict pitch count, picked up the win in four innings of work, allowing five runs on five hits.
Colter Bean entered the game with the tying run on first base, but retired the next three hitters for his fourth save.
Joe Bertolino (4-2) was saddled with the loss for Tennessee as he was tagged for six runs on seven hits in just 2 1/3 innings. The Vols did get a strong 5 2/3 innings of relief from Devon Nicholson, who held the Tigers to one unearned run on three hits.
The Tigers sent 10 men to plate in the third and got run scoring singles from Dominic Rich and Donnie Streeter, and an RBI double from Gliemmo, while also scoring on a Vol passed ball as they scored all the runs they would need.
Tennessee responded with two in the bottom of the frame and pulled to within 7-5 in the fourth on Chris Burke's three-run home run. They added a single run in the fifth on Ryan Case's double with two out to edge closer at 7-6, but that would be all they could muster as pinch runner Jamie Bennett was stranded at third when the game ended.
Tennessee's next home game will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Western Carolina.
