Lady Vols Register 6-1 Triumph Over Auburn

Tennessee to close out regular season on Sunday at South Carolina
On their final road swing of the regular season, the Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team earned a 6-1 victory over No. 75 Auburn on Friday (April 14) in Auburn, Ala. The match was the first of two weekend matches for the Orange and White. With the win, Tennessee raises its record to 15-10 on the campaign and a 6-4 mark in the Southeastern Conference, while the Tigers fall to 6-15 overall and 1-9 in the conference.
Freshman Vilmarie Castellvi (Guaynabo, P.R.) led the Lady Vol attack as she netted a three-set triumph, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, over Simone Jardim at No. 3 singles. Extending her winning skein to 12 straight matches was freshman Crystal Cleveland (Delray Beach, Fla.) who netted a 6-0, 6-0, victory versus Summa Edwards at the sixth hole. With the decision, Cleveland is now 8-1 in conference contests this season. Sophomore Alison Ojeda (San Antonio, Texas) garnered her second consecutive win over a ranked opponent as she dispatched of 77th-rated Andrea Piski, 7-5, 6-3, at the top singles slot. Also posting victories for Tennessee were sophomore Agnes Wiski (Flushing, N.Y.) and senior Candy Reid (Surrey, England) with 6-4, 6-1, and 6-3, 6-1, decisions, respectively, at the second and fifth singles positions over Katia Illarionova and Carolina Maurer.
In doubles, the only match contested was at No. 3 where the Lady Vol tandem of Cleveland and sophomore Meiling Parks (Abilene, Texas) netted an 8-3 triumph over Edwards and Maurer.
The Orange and White will next be in action on Sunday (April 16) when the squad closes out the regular season with a match versus 20th-ranked South Carolina starting at 1 p.m. Tennessee will then await word on which team they will face at the Southeastern Conference Tournament slated to begin on Thursday (April 20) in Oxford, Miss.
