April 12, 2000 | Baseball
Knoxville, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Volunteers picked up two wins with a doubleheader sweep of the Tennessee Temple Crusaders and the Lee University Flames, 17-0 and 15-8, respectively.
The Volunteers improved to 32-11 with the victories, while Tennessee Temple fell to 13-25 and Lee dropped to 22-23.
Vol third baseman Kris Bennett swung a big stick as he went 6-for-9 with nine runs batted in both games.
Bennett and Jeff Baumtrog each collected three hits and three pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as Tennessee defeated Tennessee Temple, 17-0, in a game called after seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. It marked the fifth shutout of the season for the Vols.
Tennessee led 5-0 after two innings and 6-0 after four before scoring 11 runs in the fifth and sixth innings for the final margin.
Six Vols collected at least two hits, while Bennett drove in a team-high five runs and Ryan Moffett drove in three on a three-run triple as part of UT's six-run fifth. Devon Nicholson (1-0) picked up the win in his first start of the season, allowed just two hits in three innings of work. Brad Love and Marlyn Tisdale shutout the Crusaders over the next four innings, allowing just three hits.
Jeff Christensen slugged his eighth home run of the season for UT's first run in the first. In the nightcap, the Vols used a six-run fifth inning to break open a 5-5 game and pull away for a 15-8 win over the Lee University Flames.
Bennett had another big game, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Chris Burke led the 17-hit Vol attack with four base hits and swiped two bases to give him 40 on the season. Jeff Christensen also had three hits, while Jeff Baumtrog drove in three runs on two hits. Justin Parker (2-0) allowed five runs on six hits for his second win of the season. Lance Ellis (0-2) suffered the loss as he gave up 10 runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings as the Flames used six pitchers in the game.
