April 01, 2000 | Baseball
Athens, Ga. - A seven-run sixth inning proved to be too much to overcome as the Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Tennessee Volunteers 11-5 in the second of three games at Foley Field before a crowd of 3,090.
Georgia improved to 19-10 and 7-4 in the Southeastern Conference. Tennessee, which has now lost the first two games in three of the four league series' this season, fell to 26-10 and 4-6 in conference action.
Matt Steele (5-1) picked the win for the Bulldogs, as he allowed two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and two walks. After giving up one run on three hits in the first, he allowed just one hit over the next 3 1/3 innings, retiring 13 of 14 at one point.
Brian Gates (4-2) took the loss for Tennessee as he allowed six runs (five earned) on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings with five strikeouts and no walks.
Kris Edge, one of five Bulldogs to collect at least two hits, led all hitters with three base hits. Justin Parker had three hits to lead the Volunteers, while Chris Burke and Stevie Daniel had two apiece.
The Vols' first three hitters all collected singles, but it was a stolen base by leadoff hitter Burke and two wild pitches by Steele that plated him for a 1-0 Tennessee lead. A leadoff triple by Andy Neufeld set the table as Georgia took a 3-1 lead in the fifth. With one out, the Bulldogs reeled off four straight hits, including run scoring singles by Josh Dorminy, Kris Edge and Josh Hudson in taking the lead.
A run scoring single by John Massey plated Jeff Christensen who walked and stole second and third to lead off the inning as the Vols pulled to within 3-2 in the top of the sixth. Georgia broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the frame in which it benefited from a Vol error and six base hits, including two by catcher Doc Brooks.
Tennessee added three in the seventh on Christensen's sacrifice fly, a wild pitch by Bulldog reliever Skip Browning and a single by Parker to cut the lead to 10-5. Game three of the series will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
