Knoxville to Name Street for Tee Martin
April 01, 2000 | Football
Knoxville Mayor Victor Ashe has recommended to the Metropolitan Planning Commission and Knoxville City Council that South Stadium Drive on the UT campus be named in honor of former Vol quarterback Tee Martin.
Joined by Martin and head football coach Phillip Fulmer, Ashe praised Martin's exploits on the gridiron and in the community.
"Tee has set numerous records on the football field, but will be most remembered by his friends and fans as an outstanding individual who made an impact on our community," Ashe said. "The street renaming is a permanent way for the city of Knoxville to honor the many contributions of this outstanding student-athlete who has overcome many obstacles and is now ready to move on to the next level in the NFL."
With a city street sign emblazoned with Tee Martin Dr. in white letters on a green background nearby, Martin paid tribute to his teammates for his success.
"I would like to thank all my teammates for what they've done for me while I was at UT," Martin said. "They have helped me be what I am today and make these last four years in Knoxville a great four years. It was nice to have the support we've had. It's an emotional moment having a street named after me."
"There's no way to describe what Tee Martin has meant to this program and this University," Fulmer said. "We've had a number of outstanding young men in this program, but none have been more outstanding as a player. Taking over for a legendary player like Peyton Manning was a challenge in itself, but he did and became a leader on our football team. Even as a junior, he was an outstanding leader and did a lot more than his share to see we got to be where we wanted to be -- the national championship. He's been a great example for our players."
The street name change would become effective following approval by Metropolitan Planning Commission and the City Council.
