Allen Leads Vols Past Tennessee Tech 6-2

Knoxville, Tenn. -- Wyatt Allen tossed five shutout innings as the Tennessee Volunteers defeated the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, 6-2, in game shortened to six innings because of rain. Tennessee improved to 26-8 with the win, while Tennessee Tech dropped its third straight game to fall to 12-13.
Allen (3-1) allowed only one hit, while striking out eight and walking three for the victory. Michael Fessler (1-1) suffered the loss for Tech as he allowed four runs in two innings of work.
Tennessee grabbed a 4-0 lead in the second when Jeff Christensen drew a lead off walk and scored on a Justin Parker groundout after advancing to third on John Massey's 11th double of the season. After Ryan Moffett got hit by a pitch, Ryan Case delivered with a two-run double to left to plate Massey and Moffett. Case later scored on Chris Burke's single for the Vols' fourth run.
The Vols tacked on one more in the fourth for a 5-0 lead when Parker scored on a double steal after reaching on a throwing error by shortstop Steven Folkers. Kris Bennett's straight steal of home in the fifth gave the Vols a 6-0 lead. Bennett singled to begin the fifth, moved to second on Stevie Daniel's base hit and took third on a passed ball before stealing home on a 2-1 count.
Tech tagged Vol relief pitcher Devon Nicholson for two runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout by Mark Gilliam and a single by Brad Kleeman.
The Volunteers will travel to Athens, Ga. to face the Georgia Bulldogs in a key Southeastern Conference series, Mar. 31-Apr. 2. Game times for the three-game series are 7 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
