OXFORD - John Massey went 3-for-5 to help lead the Tennessee Volunteers to a 12-2 win over SEC rival Mississippi on Friday.
Tennessee (20-6) extended a three-game win streak while improving their Southeastern Conference mark to 2-2 after pounding out 12 runs on 17 hits.
Massey, making his first appearance in Oxford after transferring to Tennessee at the beginning of the year, pounded out three hits and three RBI.
Ole Miss jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first but the Vols battled back in the second when Massey hit a RBI single to score junior designated hitter Jeff Christensen to bring them within one.
Tennessee took advantage of three hits and two Rebel errors to score four runs in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. The Vols put the game away in the seventh after posting six runs on six hits.
"We came out tonight and played really well offensively," said Tennessee Head Coach Rod Delmonico. "Defensively, we were shakey at times but we made the plays when we needed them."
Junior third baseman Kris Bennett finished the evening with three hits on six at-bats and extended his current hitting streak to 18 games. Senior Jamie Bennett pitched his first complete game of the season while improving his record to 6-1 on the season. Mississippi's Jeff McAvoy fell to 4-2 on the year after suffering his first home loss since April 4, 1998.
Tennessee will take a 1-0 series lead into game-two of the three-game series Saturday at 7:30 p.m. (EST) at University Stadium in Oxford, Miss.
