KNOXVILLE-Chris Burke went 3-for-4 while scoring three runs to lead Tennessee to a 10-4 victory over Morehead State Wednesday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Tennessee recorded its sixth straight win and moved their season record to 13-4 while Morehead State moves to .500 on the season at 4-4. Once again, Burke was the man of the hour coming close to hitting for the cycle, recording a single, double and a triple.
The Vols didn't waste any time getting runs on the board as Ryan Case doubled to score Kris Bennett and Stevie Daniel in the bottom of the first. UT extended its lead by connecting on RBI singles in the next four innings to take a commanding 6-0 lead going into the sixth.
Kris Bennett and Justin Parker had sacrifice flies that fueled a four-run sixth inning by the Vols. Later in the inning, UT added two runs as Morehead State's Cameron Langham committed a costly error with two outs remaining in the inning, allowing designated hitter Brian Gates to reach base and advance all the way to third which scored to Tennessee runs.
Morehead State was able to get three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to avoid the shutout.
Senior Jamie Bennett took the win for Tennessee and moved his season record to 2-1 while Shawn Hall fell to 1-1 after taking the loss for Morehead State.
The Volunteers will be back in action this weekend when they host Georgia State in a three-game series beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday. The Vols will play a 3 p.m. matchup on Saturday and close the series with a 2 p.m. contest on Sunday.
