Baseball Splits With Hawaii-Hilo

HILO, Hawaii -- Tennessee spilt a doubleheader with homestanding Hawaii-Hilo Sunday as the Vols opened their seven-game road trip against the Vulcans.
Tennessee (3-1) won the first game 4-3 in 10 innings, but the Vulcans (7-7) bounced back to take the nightcap 4-0.
Brandon Crowe's double in the 10th inning drove in Kris Bennett to give the Vols the extra-inning win in the opener. Bennett was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, followed by Chris Burke reaching base on an error by Hilo reliever Darin Miyake. After Justin Parker struck out, Crowe delivered the game-winning double to center field, scoring Bennett. Vol reliever Wyatt Allen (1-0) held the Vulcans in check in the bottom of the 10th to pick up his first victory of the season.
Jeff Christensen's ninth-inning single drove in Brandon Hopkins and Brian Gates to give the Vols a 3-1 advantage. However, the Vulcans tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Ryan Peterson scored on a fielder's choice and Patrick Lynch scored on a wild pitch.
The Vols' Jamie Bennett, who faced two batters in the ninth, pitched eight strong innings in the first game, allowing just five hits and two earned runs. but did not figure in the decision.
In the second game, Hawaii-Hilo's Thomas Ford (2-0) pitched a complete game shutout as the Vulcans defeated Tennessee 4-0, ending the Vols' 220-game streak of not being shutout.
The Vulcans jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings off UT starter Jordan DeJong, and added another run in the fourth off Vol reliever Brad Love.
The series continues with 10 p.m. (EST) games at Wong Stadium Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The series concludes with a Saturday doubleheader.
