Lady Vols Defeat Middle Tennessee, 7-1

In a match which well exceed four hours in length, the Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team defeated Middle Tennessee 7-1 on Saturday (Feb. 5) evening at the Goodfriend Tennis Center. The match was the second of the day for the Orange and White as they earlier defeated Illinois, 6-1. With the win, the Lady Vols move to 4-1 on the spring campaign while the Blue Raiders drop to 3-4.
Unique to the match was the experimental format used to help promote a more entertaining and quicker match for the fans. The format included the doubles matches being played first followed by singles action. The winner of two of the three matches would receive one point unless it swept all three contests, in which case it would garner two points. In singles, two out of the three sets are played, with the third set if necessary, consisting of a 10-point tiebreaker.
In singles, freshman Vilmarie Castellvi (Guaynabo, P.R.) registered a 6-4, 7-6, decision over Katja Kuehner at No. 2 and improved to 9-5 on the year in singles. Additionally, Tennessee netted wins at the third, fourth, fifth and sixth singles slots from sophomore Agnes Wiski (Flushing, N.Y.), sophomore Meiling Parks (Abilene, Texas), senior Candy Reid (Surrey, England) and freshman Crystal Cleveland (Delray Beach, Fla.), respectively. UT's suffered its only loss when Middle Tennessee's Tina Hojnik edged sophomore Alison Ojeda (San Antonio, Texas), 7-5, 6-3, at the top singles position.
UT swept all three of the doubles matches and earned both points for their efforts. The duo of Cleveland and Parks avenged a loss earlier in the day which snapped the tandem's six-match winning streak by beating the Blue Raiders' duo of Stacy Varnell and Sarah Grohnert, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.
The Lady Vols will next be in action on Saturday (Feb. 12) when they host Purdue beginning at 1 p.m. at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
