Volunteers Take Series From Western Carolina
February 02, 2000 | Baseball
KNOXVILLE-The Tennessee Volunteers took a two-game sweep of the Western Carolina Catamounts with a 12-1 victory on Wednesday. Tennessee (2-0) found weather conditions a little more pleasant, as the Vols not only enjoyed warmer temperatures but hot hitting as the team combined for 12 hits on the afternoon.
For the second game in a row, the Volunteers opened up the game early by scoring three runs in the first inning. The inning saw Tennessee grab three unearned runs off an error by Catamount shortstop Ryan Schade. In the second inning, first baseman Ryan Case took the wind out of Western Carolina when he stole home to give Tennessee a 5-0 lead. The last time a Volunteer stole home was Chris Burke against Georgia on April 30 of last year.
The Tennessee offense racked up seven runs on five hits in the last seven innings to put the game out of reach. Sophomore second baseman Chris Burke extended his hitting streak to 18 games while head coach Rod Delmonico moved to within 3 games of becoming the all-time winningest coach in school history.
Western Carolina (0-2) utilized five pitchers in the game with Wesley Overbay (0-1) taking the loss.
Tennessee also broke in five pitchers on the afternoon while junior transfer Jordan DeJong (1-0) took the win for the Vols.
Tennessee will travel to Hilo, Hawaii on Friday where they will face Hawaii-Hilo in a seven-game series beginning on Feb 6.
