Virginia Tech (1-1) used a five-run third inning that was highlighted by Chris Hutchison's three-run homer to put the Vols away early in the game. Tennessee (7-4) didn't get on the board until the bottom of the sixth when Chris Burke scored on a miscue by Hokie shortstop Spencer Harris.
Tennessee seemed to be mounting a comeback when Justin Parker slapped an RBI triple with two outs in the seventh but Kris Bennett struck out in the next at-bat to end the Vol rally.
The Vol pitching staff comprised of Wyatt Allen and Joe Bertolino accounted for 14 strikeouts on the evening. Wyatt Allen (1-1) took the loss for Tennessee.
Tennessee will be back in action on Sunday when they take on The Citadel at 5 p.m. in the final game of the Winn-Dixie Shootout.
