February 13, 2000 | Baseball
The Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans avenged three straight losses to Tennessee by sweeping the Vols 3-2, 3-1 on Saturday.
Tennessee (6-3) closed out the seven game series with Hawaii-Hilo (9-11) with a doubleheader in Kona, Hawaii. Tennessee took the series with a 4-3 record.
In the first game, sophomore second baseman Chris Burke's 12th consecutive hit broke Brad Bradshaw's Tennessee school record for consecutive hits. Burke's fifth inning single to center field gave him 12 consecutive hits dating back to game four of the Hawaii-Hilo series Feb. 8.
The Vols opened the scoring after a Justin Parker double scored Ryan Case in the top of the second. Jeff Christensen brought home the final Vol run of the game in the top of the third when he hit sacrifice fly to left field to score Chris Burke.
The Vulcans battled back in the bottom of the seventh by scoring three runs off three hits and a Tennessee error to take a 3-2 win.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Hawaii-Hilo stormed out to a 2-0 lead after Brandon Chaves hit a two RBI triple to left field with two out remaining in the third. Following a walk by Jacob Ryan, Ryan Petersen hit an RBI single to bring home Chaves. Junior Ryan Case fielded a line drive to first base which ended the inning.
Tennessee managed just one run in the sixth when Jeff Christensen drove in Chris Burke off an RBI single.
Senior Jamie Bennett (1-1) took the loss for Tennessee while tossing the first complete game by a UT pitcher this season.
