#4 Vols Remain Perfect in Win Over MTSU
December 15, 2000 | Men's Basketball
Terrence Woods scored a career-high 21 points to lead Tennessee to a 99-83 victory over Middle Tennessee State at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville.
The Vols started sluggish as the Blue Raiders built a seven-point lead in the first half, but Tennessee fought back to hold a 39-37 advantage at the break. There were eight lead changes in the first half but neither team led by more than six points during the first 20 minutes.
Woods, who had tied his career high with 14 points by halftime, keyed an 8-0 Volunteer run to end the first half with two three-pointers to give Tennessee a 39-37 advantage at the break. The sophomore from Memphis finished the day shooting 5-of-6 from the three-point range and 6-of-9 from the field.
"He was critical," Tennessee coach Jerry Green said of Woods. "It's almost a surprise when Terrence misses a shot."
A different Tennessee team returned after the break though but the scoring run continued. The Vols opened the second half with full-court pressure and it was devastating for the Blue Raiders. Tennessee scored the first 14 points of the half as MTSU turned the ball over on seven of its first nine possessions. The Blue Raiders went five minutes without scoring and by that time UT had built a 53-37 lead.
The Vols built their lead to as high as 23 points and they never trailed by less than 16 during the final 11:47 at the second half.
Notes: The Vols opened a seven-game road trip with a visit to Nashville...Tennessee's 9-0 start to the season is the third-best in the modern era and the fifth-best in school history...Terrence Woods had tied his career-high for scoring in the first half and finished with a new mark of 21 points...Isiah Victor's 21 points were a season-high...The Vols took a 3-1 series lead over MTSU...MTSU did not score in the second half until the 14:55 mark...Tennessee's bench contributed 40 points or more for the third time this season.
