Henderson, a 6-7 290-pound defensive tackle, leads the Southeastern Conference this season with 10 sacks and is a major factor in the Vols' No. 3 national ranking against the rush, surrendering just 76 yards per outing.
The junior from Nashville leads the Vols in "Big Plays" this season with 28 heading into the regular season finale at Vanderbilt. In addition to his 10 quarterback sacks, Henderson has recorded nine tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and two passes broken up.
"I think it is a very deserving honor," said Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer. "John has had an incredible year. He has played very inspired football himself and has inspired his defensive football team. I'm proud of him and I'm proud of our program and the recognition it will bring to us."
The announcement of Henderson's first-team All-America status gives Tennessee 63 individual All-America selections, who have been recognized a total of 77 times in the school's rich football history.
Henderson is also a strong candidate for this year's Outland Trophy also presented by the FWAA. Three finalists for the Outland Trophy, which has been awarded to the best interior lineman in college football since 1946, will be named on Nov. 30.
