January 16, 2000 | Women's Tennis
In the first-ever meeting between the schools the Lady Vol tennis team rallied to register a come from behind 5-4 victory over 23rd-ranked Washington on Sunday (Jan. 16) in Honolulu, Hawaii. The win improves Tennessee to 2-1 on the year while the Huskies drop to 0-2 overall.
Trailing 4-2 following the singles matches the Orange and White faced the daunting task of needing to win all three doubles contests in order to prevail in the match. Tennessee proved up to the task as the tandem of sophomore Alison Ojeda (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Vilmarie Castellvi (Guaynabo, P.R.) edged Kristina Kraszewski and Darija Klaic, 9-7, at the No. 1 doubles position for the margin of victory.
Also netting doubles wins for the Lady Vols were the tandems of senior Candy Reid (Surrey, England) and sophomore Agnes Wiski (Flushing, N.Y.) and freshman Crystal Cleveland (Delray Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Meiling Parks (Abilene, Texas) with identical 8-4 decisions at the No. 2 and No.3 doubles positions, respectively.
In singles action, Wiski netted a 6-2, 6-1, triumph at No. 3 singles over Klaic while Parks registered Tennessee's other win as she defeated Ilona Kordonskaya, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, at the No. 4 position.
The Lady Vols will now be off until returning to action on Monday (Jan. 31) when they open Southeastern Conference play against #30 Arkansas at the Goodfriend Tennis Center beginning at 2 p.m.
