Lady Vol Rowers Finish Well at Midwest Championships

MADISON, Wis. -- For the second day, the Varsity Eight and JV 8+ competed in the 1999 Midwest Rowing Championships on Sun., May 2, for the Lady Vols on Wingra Lake in Madison.
After finishing well enough on Saturday to advance to the finals in the JV 8+ and to the semi\rquote s in the Varsity 8+, Tennessee took sixth place overall in the JV race.
In the JV Eight, Michigan took first place with a time of 6:16.20. Ohio State was second (6:17.70), Wisconsin third (6:19.39), Michigan State fourth (6:20.89), Iowa fifth (6:24.89) and UT crossed last at 6:36.50.
The Lady Vols displaced strong teams from Kansas and Kansas State on the way.
In the semifinal for the Varsity 8+, Tennessee finished in fifth place behind first place Wisconsin (6:18.80), second place Michigan (6:20.23), third place Ohio State (6:20.95) and fourth place Tulsa (6:28.96). The Lady Volunteers finished with a clocking of 6:29.89, edging out sixth place finisher Notre Dame (6:36.42). The fifth place finish was just nine seconds short of qualification for the final.
Next up, the Orange and White will host the Lexus Cup/Central Region Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on Sat., May 15.
