Lady Vol Rowers to Host Lexus Central Sprints

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Lady Volunteers rowing team will host the 1999 Lexus Central Sprints on Sat., May 15, at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Sixteen teams from around the Central Region will converge on the course to compete for the 1999 Lexus Cup.
With the establishment of rowing as an NCAA sponsored sport, four regions were grouped. In addition to the Central region, the NCAA established the New England, Mid-Atlantic and West regions.
Last year, Virginia edged out Ohio State for first place overall in the regatta, with Michigan taking third place. Michigan State, Iowa and Tennessee followed in fourth, fifth and sixth places, respectively.
This year, a strong field will compete down the 2000 meter stretch on Melton Hill Lake. Four of the six top-ranked teams in the Central Region Varsity Eight rankings will be competing, including second-ranked Michigan, fourth-ranked Ohio State, fifth-ranked Michigan State and sixth-ranked Iowa.
Also competing in the Varsity Four races will be second-ranked Ohio State, third-ranked Michigan, fifth-ranked Michigan State and sixth-ranked Iowa.
Racing will take place throughout the day, with heats in the morning and finals finishing up in mid-afternoon. Following completion of all the day\rquote s events, an awards ceremony will crown the winners of each event and the overall champion.
