Head coach Michael Fancutt is happy with the early recognition, but knows that the SEC schedule will be where the Vols make their mark. "Our goal at UT is being a top 10 team. We know we have the kind of players to be that good. However, being No. 9 in the country usually means being No. 5 in the SEC. Our conference traditionally has four to five teams ranked in the top 10 throughout the year. We know we have a tough road ahead of us," Fancutt said. LSU (No. 2), Florida (No. 5), Ole Miss (No. 6) and Georgia (No. 8) all enter the poll ahead of Tennessee.
The Vols also placed three players in the top 50 individual rankings. Parsons is the highest ranked Vol at No. 17, while Handoyo is right behind Parsons at No. 18. The biggest mover was sophomore Adam Carey. Carey went from unranked in the fall to No. 49 in the latest poll. Carey posted wins over five ranked players in the fall season.
Fancutt is also happy with the recogniton of his top three players. "I'm pleased with Peter and Mark being ranked in the top 20, but I expect that from them. They are outstanding players with great credentials. I'm extremely pleased with Adam Carey's ranking of No. 49. He had an outstanding fall, and I look for him to push Peter and Mark for time at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions," said Fancutt.
