Tennessee Rowing Squads Finish Well in Boston and Knoxville
October 23, 1999 | Rowing
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee rowing team completed competition at the Head of the Tennessee regatta in Knoxville, Tenn., on Sat., Oct. 23, earning gold and bronze medals on the day. The other half of the Lady Vol team finished well (16th-place) in the Club 8+ race at the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston, Mass.
UT sent two shells to Beantown, with the Club Eight competing at 2:45 p.m. on Sat. The Lady Vol crew, coxed by Shannon McMahon, finished in 16th position with a time of 19:27.72, and was propelled by Ginny Bradley, Kristen Logan, Joyce Kranzke, Kim Walsh, Dawn Ware, Nicole Small, Kelly Kraiss and Alexis Lombard. The 16th-place finish was eight places higher than 1998’s 24th-place finish in the Club 8+.
The Orange and White faired extremely well in the events in which it entered at the Head of the Tennessee, claiming gold in the Collegiate Pair (2-) and bronze in the Varsity 8+. Sara Neill and Marissa Weaver rowed the 2- to victory with a clocking of 23:18.13.
The Varsity 8+ "C" boat crossed the buoys in third place (18:10.00), and was led by coxswain Tina Mazzolini, and Kelly Hohenbrink, Ashley Evans, Shelley Stanton, Lindy Herzog, Roberta Hern, Brittany Brewer, Brittany Farmer and Sally BeVille provided the thrust in the bronze medal winning effort.
The Lady Vols also entered two boats in the Collegiate Novice 8+ competition on Lake Loudoun (Tennessee River), taking 10th place (22:34.63) and 14th place (24:19.20), despite utilizing only six of the eight rowers at any one time down the three-mile course. The Novice shells used only six athletes at a time due to the fact that the Novice members of the team (first year rowers with no prior experience) have only practiced with up to six of the eight members of each boat rowing at any one time to this point in the season.
The Tennessee Championship Eight "A" boat will compete on Sun., Oct. 24, at 4:00 p.m. in its event at the Head of the Charles regatta with hopes of improving upon last year’s 38th-place finish.
Following competition on Sun., Tennessee will prepare for the Head of the Chattahoochee and the Chattahoochee Chase on Nov. 6 & 7, respectively.
